As the July 1 moving day in Quebec approaches, pet owners are pleading with landlords to change the 'no pet' clause found in many leases.
Alana Devine, director of animal advocacy with the Montreal SPCA said the number of animals surrendered doubles around moving day. About half of all Quebec families own pets but just 3% of landlords expressly allow tenants to keep dogs in their apartments, according to the SPCA.
In Vancouver, the city recently approved a motion to help renters keep their pets but may face opposition from the Residential Tenancy Act which has no plans to change the current rules.
Geoff Urton with the BC SPCA says rental property regulations are the number one reason animals are surrendered to them.
Similar issues are found all over the world, and solutions are sought to keep pets with their families. Currently, Ontario is the only province outlawing 'no pets clauses' under the law.
