Police were called to a Cape Breton animal shelter Wednesday after the board of directors was disbanded and the manager allegedly locked herself into her office.
The Sydney branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had faced criticisms over deficiencies in animal care and a lack of adherence to policy and governance. The Nova Scotia SPCA dismissed the board this week.
Kristin Williams, executive director of the Nova Scotia SPCA, said
she called Cape Breton Regional Police to the shelter after
informing manager Patsy Rose she was being let go.
"When I spoke with Patsy Rose, she became quite upset and she actually locked herself in her office. I was actually very, very
concerned, so I contacted the local police to intervene and
make sure she was OK," Williams said.
At the time of the visit the Cape Breton SPCA had about 40 dogs in
wire cages.
"And our main concern with this branch is that they have not been providing suitable and adequate care to these animals,"
said Williams.
