Service animals promote celebration of companion animals

Studies have shown there are absolute connections when it comes to pets and human health. A remarkable program developed in Manitoba is proving that canine companionship can be a valuable prescription when it comes to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in soldiers.

George Leonard, certified dog trainer, is part of an aboriginal group that has trained more than 350 dogs of all kinds and 37 PTSD dogs. Using dogs to help treat PTSD has been used in the American and British militaries for years but this program is a first for Canada.

The program is a proven success with PTSD patients reporting significantly improved symptoms. This CTV News article describes three soldiers and their service dog stories and demonstrates the uncanny knack animals have to make us happy and healthy.

Coincidentally, the Summit 2013 theme will focus on understanding, promoting and celebrating the pet experience and identifying the value pets bring to our lives, homes, communities and culture.
