Veterinary medical students at Texas A&M are being put to the test in a simulated emergency situation as part of their fourth year rotation.
The group is working on alongside various professionals to develop ascertain the role of veterinarians in the community and in an emergency responder situation.
"This is the first required rotation in emergency response for veterinary medical students in the nation," said Angela Clendenin, director of communications and public information for the Veterinary Emergency Team. "(Hurricane) Katrina really kind of brought up animal issues in disaster situations."
The students were also trained in infectious disease outbreaks, crisis communications with media, field hospital set-up, stress management and psychological first aid for responders, and local and state laws impacting animal welfare.
