Last week, a Victoria woman announced she is filing a lawsuit after her Havanese dog was killed in traffic while under the care of a doggie daycare.
Jackie Thomas is seeking damages for post traumatic stress disorder following the death of her dog Black Jack, in 2011. The incident happened while an animal handler from Camrick PurrFetch Petcare was walking the dog who became distracted by another dog and ran into traffic.
Insurance covered the cost of the dog and the hospital bill, but Thomas wants compensation for the loss of her pet and the mental distress the loss of Black Jack has caused her. Thomas would also like to see doggie daycares regulated like child daycares and is calling for greater regulation in the dog-walking industry.
"There's no accountability," said Thomas. "I'm a nurse and if I'm responsible for somebody's death I'll be held accountable and there will be a price to pay."
Comments on the CBC.com article about the lawsuit are largely in favour of the doggie daycare and some readers hold a strong opinion that pets are 'just animals' and regulations like those employed with childcare are implausible.
