In the United States, the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council provides its members a voice in state and national legislative issues and 2012 has kept the Council on its toes. PIJAC dealt with more than 1,700 pieces of pet-related legislation over the past year.
With pet-related legislation and regulations up more than 33 percent, it's been a busy legislative season for the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council
A few of the legislative pieces to cross PIJAC's desk included animal abuse registries, invasive species, retail pet sale bans and warranty laws.
In Canada, PIJAC has worked hard over the years to build itself as a source of expertise in matters of animal care and animal protection legislation. PIJAC Canada is making progress in the industry by entering into such issues as a contributor rather than taking a confrontational role. As a result of this proactive stance, PIJAC Canada enjoys a good working relationship with both the federal and provincial levels of government.
"When these agencies contemplate legislation most likely to affect companion animals, there is a good chance they will call us in to consult," said Louis McCann, executive director for PIJAC Canada.
