For its extraordinary efforts to address both the physical and psycological aspects of animal care for animals in shelters or impound facilities, the Regina Humane Society was nominated by Jennifer Dooley of Petsecure pet health insurance who recognized the shelter's lifesaving strategies, implemented last year, which saw a 14% decrease in incoming animals, 18% decrease in euthanasia and 12% increase in adoptions.
Lisa Koch, executive director of RHS, helped lead the shelter to these successes by launching Canada's first mobile spay/neuter program for the financially disadvantaged pet owners in partnership with the City of Regina and Saskatchewan's first Humane Society Animal Hospital. Their efforts have also resulted in the conversion of all Regina pet retailers selling dogs and cats to RHS satellite adoption facilities.
"We are absolutely thrilled with this honour, but this is really recognition for our community," said Koch. "We simply would not be able to do the work we do if it wasn't for the ongoing support from the public and the combined efforts of our community partners."
Presented by PetSmart Charities of Canada, the 2012 Summit for Animal Sheltering recognizes an organization that best addresses the physiological aspects of animals in shelters, pounds, retail outlets, kennels, veterinary clinics/hospitals, grooming shops and breeding facilities.
