New approach clinics cater to low-income pet owners

Veterinary clinics that cater to low-income pet families are popping up in several US states. Pets in Need and PetAid are two examples which focus on offsetting the sometimes high cost of veterinary care to ensure American pets are provided with the care and attention they need.

An article published on Coloradoan.com described PetAid as an organization that exists to provide a safety net for the health care of pets in Colorado. "Its vision is to ensure that underprivileged and at-risk pet receive the health care they need and deserve to remain bonded with their human companions."

Reports like these may prompt conversation around a recent blog post by Edmonton Humane Society CEO Stephanie McDonald which posed the question: Will pet ownership be reserved for the elite? McDonald will present her experiences and thoughts at the upcoming Urban Animal Regional Conference in Calgary 22 April 2013. Afternoon Pet Experience Project workshops focused on defining a positive pet experience will likely include some element of this discussion as well.
