Veterinarians push House members to pass Marketplace Fairness Act

Veterinarians in the U.S. are pushing the House of Representatives to pass a crucial tax bill allowing individual states to collect sales tax from online purchases made anywhere in the country.

The Marketplace Fairness Act would give states the authority to manage their sales tax laws, closing the loophole that currently prohibits states from collecting sales and use taxes that are owned on purchases from out-of-state online vendors.

Veterinarians who run neighbourhood clinics operate at a competitive disadvantage to Internet retailers because they must collect state and local taxes on any prescription, product or equipment they sell. Their online competitors are not obligated to collect these taxes since they typically operate out of state, meaning Internet retailers gain a competitive edge over local vet clinics by offering lower costs on products.

The American Veterinary Medical Association is part of the Marketplace Fairness Coalition, which is comprised of more than 200 business and trade associations from across the country that supports federal legislation that will empower states to update their sales and use tax laws to level the playing field for all sellers.
