Fourteen People Treated for Salmonella Poisoning from Contaminated Pet Food

Fourteen people have become ill and five are being treated in hospital as a result of a rare form of salmonella poisoning from contaminated pet food, now recalled in both Canada and the U.S.

No infections have been reported in Canada, although the affected brands of pet food are distributed in Eastern Canadian Provinces - Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and New Brunswick.

Diamond Pet Foods has expanded the recall since first reports of salmonella contamination in April. Precautions in Canada have already taken place with over hundreds of bags of the suspect dry pet food put into quarantine at Pet Valu warehouses.

The recall includes the following pet food brands:
  • Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food
  • Diamond Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
  • Adult Light Formula dry dog food
  • Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food.
  • Taste of the Wild and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, both cat and dog food
  • Canidae, Wellness and Natural Balance dog formula's
People can get salmonella by handling infected dog food, then not washing their hands before eating or handling their own food. Pet owners are advised to throw the dry food out immediately, wash their hands with soap and water and clean any surfaces exposed to the food with a mild bleach solution.

  1. Some veterinarians and pet owners have long advocated raw meat diet for pets, but exposure to harmful bacteria remains a major concern. Nowadays, the news headlines are filled with stories about contaminated imported pet food. It's best to make sure the food you are buying is made in the U.S.
