Opportunity with Association of Animal Shelter Administrators of Ontario

Since 2005, three attempts have been made to create a national professional organization for animal care, control & welfare. All have been unsuccessful despite financial support from the Urban Animal™ program and others. However, the need continues for an organization that could influence common standards, provide a career development path for professionals, share resources and participate in the conversations of the Urban Animal industry.

During the early 80's in Ontario, a stand-alone, not for profit association was created, with each member treated as an individual professional. Jim Bandow's early contributions, and later those of Don Mitton and Carl Bandow, built upon the knowledge and experience they gained as Board Members of the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators (SAWA) to form the very successful Association of Animal Shelter Administrators of Ontario (AASAO). Led by current President, Kathy Duncan, the membership of AASAO is comprised of animal care, control & welfare professionals from municipal animal services, humane societies and contractors providing animal services across the province of Ontario.

Recognizing the potential for supporting individual professionals across the nation, leaders of the Urban Animal™ program met with leaders of AASAO to suggest collaborative efforts. At a recent meeting, the board of the AASAO agreed to open Associate Memberships to individuals meeting their criteria beyond Ontario so they too could benefit from the resources and relationships of this organization.
In an effort to encourage individuals from the Atlantic, Prairie and Pacific regions to join AASAO, the Urban Animal program has agreed to provide collaborative support. During 2014, individuals from across Canada who meet the criteria for AASAO Associate Membership can complete the automated application form on the Urban Animal™ site. These applicants will be provided with an AASAO voucher ($100) to reduce the cost of attending the Regional Conferences. Furthermore,  the Urban Animal™ program has also agreed to forward the 2014 Associate Membership fee ($50) for each Regional Conference delegate who joins AASAO. Both parties hope the membership drive will allow prospective Associate Members to save $150 and enjoy the benefits of AASAO.
