2012 OpenSpace Sessions set to move the Industry

The 2012 OpenSpace Session in the Victoria Room of the Chateau Lake Louise on Friday, October 12, is designed to provoke dialogue between thought leaders of the companion animal industry.

Through these conversations, the industry develops strategies and evolves to meet changing times, ideas, technologies and obstacles. In addition to conversations that may arise from the ‘facts and evidence’ Sessions on Thursday, key industry stakeholders are bringing forward seven primary conversations:

2012.A  George Potter – The CEO of Alberta Animal Services revives a conversation initiated in 2007 to organize a National Organization for the Professionals who enforce and investigate on behalf of pets and people in our communities. A leading question – How do we encourage national standards and increase respect for the role of these professionals in our communities?

2012.B  Dr. Liz O’Brien – The CEO of Cats clinics in Hamilton and the National spokesperson for the 2011 Year of the Cat initiative, explores taking the Care for Cats movement to the next level. A leading question - How do we make the national cat initiative sustainable in our communities over the long term?

2012.C  Larry Evans – Creating a non-profit vessel for industry collaborations and national initiatives. A leading question – How could a Summit Foundation operate, be governed and determine the industry consensus for the funds supplied to these initiatives?

2012.D  Kate MacDonald – Chief Executive Officer of OSPCA has been exploring how Humane and Rescue organizations can change to be effective and sustainable both now and in the future. Leading questions include: What will these organization look like? What will change in their mandate?  How will they be funded?

2012.E  Drew Van Niekerk – A Nationally recognized Veterinarian helped develop Canada’s largest practice aggregator. Drew is thinking about the gap between what veterinarians and service providers provide and what pet owners want. A leading question – What changes will be necessary for the industry to deliver the healthcare and experience pet families desire?

2012.F  Kristin Williams – Executive Director of the Nova Scotia SPCA has been thinking about how governance can be improved in the Humane and Rescue sector.  A leading question – How can we attract board members and provision them to be successful understanding the organization, the core objectives and their role in governance?

2012.G  Louis McCann – The Executive Director of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada [PIJAC Canada] has been thinking about the role of member retailers and service providers in each community.  Leading questions include: As we move toward social media and the experience economy, what are the new roles for these service providers in our communities?  How can we move toward these roles without creating unintended consequences for the industry and the pet families we serve?

Throughout these conversations, topics may arise and gain the support of delegates during the opening session on Friday. The vision for OpenSpace is to embrace evidence and develop strategies needed in our communities, our regions and our industry. Outcomes produced may include recommendations for the organizations that govern our industry, toolkits for the agencies that support pet families in our communities and/or a consensus for priorities that can be supported by all stakeholders in the industry.

Summit moves to LinkedIn

Because it's all about you. Because it's all about your relationships and your brand. Because it's all about transparency.

The Summit OpenSpace Wiki is moving to a LinkedIn group designed specifically for Summit advocates, mentors, alumni and associates. LinkedIn provides a place to monitor the action, participate in the various industry conversations and view industry communications and comments.

LinkedIn is a professional instrument devised to establish each individual's or company's brand. It builds and sustains relationships with other like-minded individuals and maintains professional lines of communication. With the shift from OpenSpace to LinkedIn, leaders and stakeholders in the companion animal industry are accepting the opportunity to network with members of the industry nationwide.

In addition, LinkedIn delivers better value for it's members and allows you to control your passwords, settings, networks and profile direction. It's a tool used by more than 175 million individuals and companies in over 200 countries and territories.

Members of the LinkedIn Summit for Urban Animal Strategies group will enjoy all of these benefits and further advantages directly related to the companion animal industry including increased knowledge and expertise, building and maintaining relationships and up-to-date news and information pertaining to the Summit.

Summit OpenSpace Moves to a Dedicated Wiki

Since 2009, the Summits for Urban Animal Strategies has used the PetLynx Corporate Wiki for Summit communications as well as OpenSpace conversations and commentary.  In 2011, all Summit program subscribers were provided a new username and password for a dedicated OpenSpace Wiki. This new facility for Summit Advocates, Mentors, Alumni and Associates, is where to monitor the action, participate in the various industry conversations and peruse draft documents, industry communications and comments.

During the 2011 Summit, the public area of this new OpenSpace wiki was open for all viewers, however, this access is now closed and is only available to Summit subscribers or on Twitter by following hashtag #ISUAS.  The public area of the OpenSpace wiki will be developed to carry announcements, draft documents and important communications from each OpenSpace conversation which will benefit the entire industry.  The OpenSpace public area will be made available to the more than 40,000 stakeholders in Canada at no charge.

The annual subscription for this service is $300 which includes username/password access and support as required.  The OpenSpace subscription is included in the annual Summit Program subscription as well as the subscription to the Regional Summits each spring.  Please contact Judi Cannon 705.749.6607 or subscribe to one of the Regional Summits in 2012 if you wish to become involved in the Summit program or any one of the OpenSpace conversations now underway.

Delegates to the 2011 International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies initiated 19 conversations during OpenSpace.  Each of these conversations will be highlighted by the convener during the next few months.

An OpenSpace message from Karen Dawson

Here I am, learning my way around our online OpenSpace, while preparing to create in-person OpenSpace at the upcoming Regional Summits. It has been fun for me to cruise through the various threads and strands and learn how this medium works. I can already see the tremendous potential as we collect and share our various perspectives and ideas in one, common place.

For those of you who haven't yet experienced a summit or conference (or meeting) that incorporates OpenSpace, I look forward to introducing the format when we travel across Canada meeting you, sharing ideas, and learning what's new, exciting, and important in your respective regions. The possibilities for collaboration are limitless, especially as we all learn how to dive in to the conversations that most interest us, no matter what the medium.

Over the next few weeks I will be checking the online OpenSpace to pay attention to the conversations that unfold and I look forward to engaging in person to forward our collective thinking.

See you soon!

Karen
