The 'Voice' of the Canadian pet industry is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2013. The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) of Canada is a not for profit, member based organization that advocates on behalf of the Canadian pet industry, while acting as a credible source of information and education for pet related businesses.
In 1988, a handful of companies banded together to fight an unfair proposed animal control bylaw in Toronto. From their victory, PIJAC Canada was formed. Since then, the organization has seen significant changes in the industry, most notably, the evolvement of pets as family members.
This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the National Pet Industry Trade Show. Beginning with 50 booths, the show has grown into an industry institution with 408 exhibitors at the 2012 show. ExpoZoo, the Western Pet Expo and the Calgary Pet Industry Trade Show were gradually added to the roster to service other areas of the country and industry. The purpose of the events has been to provide a forum for manufacturers and distributors to showcase the latest in pet care to retail and service providers.
PIJAC Canada's advocacies on behalf of pets and pet owners has contributed to many industry successes. Last year, PIJAC began a campaign called "Animal Welfare is Everyone's Business" to showcase examples of how the industry focuses on the wellbeing of pets.
