HEALTH - Veterinarian Recognized as Person of National Significance

This week Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada commemorated the importance of Dr. Frank W. Schofield as a person of national historic significance.

A special ceremony was held on September 30th in Guelph, Ontario with members of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the University of Guelph and Ontario Veterinary College, the Schofield Memorial Foundation, and Dr. Chung, former Prime Minister of Korea.

Schofield was considered an outstanding veterinarian who was nationally and internationally known for his research in animal disease, in particular sweet clover poisoning of cattle, infections in young animals and viral mink enteritis, which led to improvements in both human and animal health.

His research explained bacterial, viral and toxicological ailments, which he found new ways to prevent or treat. He identified the dangers of Escherechia coli and developed Warfarin, still an important anti-coagulant.

Through his scientific, missionary and political work in Korea, he contributed to the democratic development of that country and is recognized there as a patriot.

He was closely involved with the independence movement by documenting the mass jailing, torture and deaths associated with the struggle for Korean sovereignty.

At the time of his retirement from the Ontario Veterinary College, almost 75% of all English speaking veterinarians in Canada had studied under Dr. Schofield.

Schofield is the only veterinarian to be recognized as a person of national significance by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.

Created in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of Environment and Climate Change regarding the national historic significance of places, people and events that have marked Canada’s history.

2015 Summit Awards Revealed by InfoStream

During the next two weeks the 2015 Summit Awards will be revealed each day using InfoStream. The 2015 Summit Awards will then be turned over to local representatives of Pets Plus Us, the 2015 Sponsor, for delivery and presentation where possible.

For ten years the Summit Awards have represented the recognition component of the Urban Animal program in North America. Nominees for the Summits include individuals and organizations active in the Urban Animal Industry. Nominations are confirmed by the Urban Animal Action Council, who review the nominations, voting, process and results to ensure the established criteria are met and that no nominating or voting irregularities are present. The decision of the Action Council with respect to these matters is final.

This year's award program signified the most involvement from urban animal subscribers to date, with 35 nominees in 12 categories and an outstanding 16,144 ballots cast in the process. Thank you to everyone who nominated, voted and helped recognize the initiatives and accomplishments of all the nominees.

PIJAC Canada Offers Pet Care Training Program

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada (PIJAC Canada) is offering an updated Pet Care Training Program. The program is designed for people that work with and care for pets and offers five species training series. Each series covers health care, disease and illness recognition, treatment, and identification. The Pet Care Training Program was created by veterinarians and industry experts. Graduates of each series will receive a Certified Canine, Feline, Reptile, Avian or Small Mammal Specialist Designation through PIJAC Canada.

President and CEO of PIJAC Canada, Louis McCann said, “Our goal for this newly revised program was to deliver a useful tool for pet service providers, rich in information that can be accessible anywhere, anytime, for years to come. Since 1991 our purpose for offering the program has always been to make available an affordable and creditable learning tool for pet service professionals.”

The nomination process for the 2015 Summit Awards is under way. The 2015 Awards will be presented at the Summit for Urban Animal Strategies in October.

A significant Urban Animal mission is to recognize those who achieve excellence. Summit Awards deliver recognition each year using an academy style system of nominations followed by an open polling process.

Trifaux Appointed Honorary Colonel to 410 Tactical Fighter Squadron

On June 28th, 2015, Thomas R Trifaux was appointed Honorary Colonel (HCol) to 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. This squadron operates out of Cold Lake, Alberta where 410 Squadron trains Canada's next generation of fighter pilots. Tom will serve in the capacity of HCol for a period of three years fulfilling 3 main duties:

• Coach and confidant to the Commanding Officer of 410 Squadron
• Community liaison and public ambassador for 410 Squadron
• Support for RCAF members and their families

This unique honor provides a glimpse of the personal commitment Tom brings to those risking their lives to protect our freedom and the recognition bestowed upon him by the Government of Canada and those in Command of the Canadian Air Force.

Tom is the Chair of the PetLynx Board of Directors. In this civilian role he brings mentoring and alignment to the Directors and Executive Management of PetLynx Corporation.
