Toronto Animal Services Rolls Out Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic

Toronto Animal Services’ SNYP (Spay/Neuter Your Pet) Mobile Clinic is officially hitting the road tomorrow.

It will travel to neighbourhood improvement areas throughout the city to provide spay and neuter services for dogs and cats. Residents with an income of less than $50,000 will qualify for subsidized or waived fees.

Over 12 metres long and outfitted like a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic, the truck was purchased thanks to a $250,000 grant from PetSmart Charities and additional donations from Toronto residents.

Toronto will be the first city in Canada to employ a mobile spay and neuter clinic.

The hope is the truck will remove financial and geographical barriers that prevent people from altering their animals.

"We want to target those people in Toronto who otherwise do not have access to a veterinarian," Mary Lou Leiher, the manager of partnerships and marketing at Toronto Animal Services told CBC.

The SNYP Truck will be unveiled on Wednesday May 11th at Nathan Phillips Square from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a live band and food trucks.

Spay/Neuter grants now available for British Columbia

The BC SPCA is offering spay/neuter grants to the province's communities to help address the issue of pet overpopulation. Through several private donations designated to the BC SPCA for spay/neuter programs, the society is providing $87,500 in grants in 2015 - $80,000 or cats and $7,500 for dogs and rabbits.

Now in its third year, the program allocates funds to registered animal charities and non-profits, municipalities, veterinarians, BC SPCA branches, First Nations governments and First Nations tribal councils. Successful applicants must meet specific criteria and be able to administer the grant.

The BC SPCA spends $2 million annually on spay/neuter initiatives across the province, including the provision of free and low-cost spay/neuter operations through SPCA clinics in Vancouver, Prince George and Kamloops. Addressing the massive homeless cat issue in B.C. is a major focus of the BC SPCA's five-year Strategive Plan says Executive Director, Craig Daniell.

The deadline to apply for a BC SPCA grant is Dec. 31, 2014. For more information, visit www.spca.bc.ca.

BC SPCA receives $110,000 grant

The British Columbia SPCA received a grant of $110,900 from PetSmart Charities of Canada to reduce the homeless cat population in Port Alberni by offering low-cost spay/neuter clinics. BC SPCA chief executive officer Craig Daniell says the grant will help the Alberni-Clayoquot branch reach its goal of sterilizing at least 800 cats over the next two years.

All low-income cat guardians living in Port Alberni are eligible to apply to the spay/neuter fund. While the program is free, recipients will be asked to donate $30 back to the fund if possible to continue the efforts.

To apply for the fund or for more information, contact the Alberni-Clayoquot SPCA Branch at 250-723-5269 or visit the shelter at 4936 Broughton Street, Port Alberni.
