Canadian Texting Explodes Past 2011 Records

According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunication Association (CWTA) Canadians sent 71.5 billion text messages in the first nine months of 2012.


This Canadian text traffic represents more than 90% of the 78 billion messages sent in all of 2011. In September 2012 alone, Canadians sent approximately 274 million messages per day amounting to 8.2 billion messages for the month.



Special Holiday Stats: Approximately 424.5 million text messages were sent by Canadians on Christmas Day (December 25, 2012) and another 429.4 million text messages on New Year’s Day (January 1, 2013).

Sorting out how to message/communicate with stakeholders in this environment is a challenge every enterprise faces. On the other side, protecting lips while sipping from the fire hose becomes the issue for consumers.

Canadians Sent 78 Billion Text Messages in 2011

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) released the total person-to-person text messages sent in 2011 which totaled 78 billion, up from the 56.4 billion messages sent in 2010. More than 7 billion of those text messages were sent in December 2011 alone, an average of approximately 227 million messages per day. 

In addition, Canadians sent 326.7 million person-to-person MMS messages in 2011. As of December 2011, Canadians sent an average of 1.2 million MMS messages per day.

According to CWTA Canadians sent 18 Billion text messages in Q1 2011

Total person-to-person text messages sent by Canadians in the first three months of the year numbered 18 billion, a 10% increase over the Q4/10 total of 16.4 billion messages. In March 2011 alone, 6.2 billion text messages were sent, representing an average of 199 million messages per day.

Canadians also sent and received a total of 697 million Common Short Code text messages in the first quarter, an 11% increase over the Q4/10 total of 626 million messages.
