Positive Pet Experience: Dogs in the workplace can help reduce employee stress

A Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) study found that dogs in the workplace can reduce a person's stress levels by as much as 11% by the end of a typical workday.

The VCU researchers compared employees who bring their dogs to work, employees who leave their dogs at home and employees who do not own dogs. The difference in stress levels between employees who bring their dogs versus those who leave their dogs at home was significant.

More and more, companies are recognizing the benefits of having dogs in the workplace. Research like this VCU study cite increased staff morale and worker productivity, increased camaraderie and job satisfaction.

A 2006 American Pet Products Manufacturing Association survey found that one in five companies allow pets in the workplace, 55 million Americans believe having pets in the workplace leads to a more creative environment and 38 million believe having pets in the workplace creates a productive work environment.

Companies like Google, Amazon, Build-a-Bear Workshop (HQ) all follow a 'bring your dog to work everyday' policy. In Canada, PIJAC, Procter & Gamble Pet Care and Pets Plus Us are among the pet friendly organizations catering to two and four-legged employees
