FUTURE TRENDS - Millennials Own More Pets than Other Generations

Millennials are, according to Bob Vetere, the President and CEO of the American Pet Products Association (APPA), “a very passionate, active, and connected group” of pet owners.

APPA released their 2017 National Pet Owners Survey at the end of March, and the findings indicate that, for the first time, millennials own more pets than Gen Xers or baby boomers.

Millennials are the generation born between 1981 and 2000, and reading between the lines of the report, it is possible to see hints of a generation leaning on their pets as they struggle with ongoing economic stress.

Some of the key findings from the APPA report are:
·       85% of owners believe pets are a good source of affection
·       82% agree that interacting with a pet can help them relax
·       81% are aware that owning a pet can be beneficial to their own health
·       81% feel unconditional love for their pet
·       61% feel buying a pet product made in the USA is important to them

Many of these findings are encouraging.

Engaged, committed, loving pet owners are good for pets and for pet-related industries. However, when discussing the millennial generation, intentions cannot be teased apart from economics.

Millennials are the subject of heated debate among pundits and professionals.

Are they the most entitled generation? (Probably not.) The most narcissistic generation? The most cautious generation? The most unique generation? The most stressed out generation? The most anxious generation? The most progressive generation?

If nothing else, they may be the most speculated upon generation!

Some of these generational traits have significant implications for the role of millennials within the pet industry.

In 2014, Forbes reported that half of Millennials were living paycheck to paycheck, and three years later, millennials are carrying high debt loads.

Despite the fact that millennials are a passionate generation of pet owners, pet ownership is expensive and millennials are a generation beset by economic insecurity and political volatility.

This economic instability is one reason so many millennials own pets, but not houses.

It is also one reason so many love their pets unconditionally, but are forgoing or delaying parenthood.

But, despite the fact that pet ownership is not as expensive as home ownership or parenthood, economic instability can put pet ownership at risk.

In Alberta, the Calgary Humane Society has seen a significant increase in owner surrenders coinciding with the ongoing economic struggle.

This pattern repeats itself across North America, where economic hardship is a frequent cause of pet surrender.

Despite this, millennial spending on pets is expected to increase in the next year.

Not only are pets being treated as surrogate children by many millennials, there is also the reality of health benefits resulting from pet ownership.

Studies show that pets can help with everything from PTSD to high blood pressure, and with healthcare costs remaining high, pets may play yet another important role for millennials.

Regardless of the pressures facing the millennial generation, their pets are standing by to help.

What are the Results of the 2015-2016 Nation Pet Owners Survey?

Bob Vetere, President and CEO of the American Pet Products Association (APPA), has announced the results of their biennial 2015-2016 National Pet Owners Survey. The survey reached 79.7 million households with pets. One important survey discovery was that there are increased numbers of new and young pet owners. New pet owners populate approximately 10% of the total pet owner population. This represents an increase of almost eight million new pet owners. Vetere states, “These numbers demonstrate huge potential for the industry to grow with up-and-coming, new pet owners.”

The newest generation of pet owners purchase more expensive animals, seek veterinary care more often, and buy more items for their pets. “This generation also likes high-tech gadgets like pet cams and electronic health monitoring collars, and convenience products to take their pets with them or care for them while they’re gone,” said Vetere. “This opens the door for innovation in products and services as well.” Pets and pet products are increasingly being sourced online and by using social media networks.

In previous surveys, the largest population of pet owners was the Baby Boomers. However, Baby Boomers are reaching life stages where they are reducing pet ownership. Vetere is not worried, he states, “In fact, the growing incidence of pet owners among the younger generations is so encouraging, we are extremely optimistic about the future of pet ownership and the industry that stands to serve those pets and their owners.”

The Survey also found that more businesses are becoming pet-friendly.

  • 8% of pet owners are allowed to bring their dogs to work.
  • 28% of pet owners have taken their dog to a hotel.
  • 9% of pet owners have taken their pet to a restaurant.

More people also believe that pets are good for their health. In fact, for 64% of pet owners, owning a pet has positive health benefits that are important to the owner. Vetere states, “Studies now exist that show pets can help improve our cardiovascular health, improve immunity in young children and assist with therapy for autistic children and people suffering from PTSD. Our desire to take better care of our pets and the joys and benefits they provide are continuing to work together to grow pet ownership and keep this great industry strong.”

Pet Industry Spending at All-Time High

The American Pet Products Association (APPA), announced that overall spending in the pet industry for 2014 exceeded $58 billion. The spending figures are part of APPA's annual comprehensive report that covers pet spending in the segments: food, supplies/over-the-counter medications, veterinary care, live animal purchase and other services.

Pet services, which includes grooming, boarding, walking, training, daycare and event spa services for pets saw the largest growth with veterinary care spending coming in as the second largest growth. But the food category is the leading source of dollars spent within the industry as pet owners become increasingly aware of the quality and source of food given to their animal companions.

Pet owners disagree with pet-sale bans

By an overwhelming margin, America's dog and cat owners say the best way to crack down on illegal puppy mill operators is not to ban the sale of dogs and cats at local pet stores, as a handful of local communities have done, but rather to enact and enforce tougher breeder standards (67.3%).

  • 92% of U.S. adults report follow-up visits to breeders are needed to ensure regulations are being followed to avoid puppy mills

Leading industry organizations join forces to overturn pet sale ban

Four industry organizations have joined together to support a pending lawsuit that challenges the prohibition of the sale of cats and dogs by pet stores in Phoenix, AZ, in hopes of preventing this ban and the passage of future bans.

The American Pet Products Association (APPA), the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC), the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA) and the World Pet Association (WPA) have collectively donated $125,000 to support the lawsuit brought into the U.S. District Court in Phoenix on behalf of Phoenix pet store, Puppies 'N Love.

"Bans of this nature often punish stores and breeders who sell quality pets and breeds that are unavailable in shelters, and these restrictions threaten our industry," said APPA President and CEO, Bob Vetere. "By working together to help overturn these types of bans, we can use this opportunity to establish better standards for both breeders and pet stores."

Positive Pet Experience: Dogs in the workplace can help reduce employee stress

A Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) study found that dogs in the workplace can reduce a person's stress levels by as much as 11% by the end of a typical workday.

The VCU researchers compared employees who bring their dogs to work, employees who leave their dogs at home and employees who do not own dogs. The difference in stress levels between employees who bring their dogs versus those who leave their dogs at home was significant.

More and more, companies are recognizing the benefits of having dogs in the workplace. Research like this VCU study cite increased staff morale and worker productivity, increased camaraderie and job satisfaction.

A 2006 American Pet Products Manufacturing Association survey found that one in five companies allow pets in the workplace, 55 million Americans believe having pets in the workplace leads to a more creative environment and 38 million believe having pets in the workplace creates a productive work environment.

Companies like Google, Amazon, Build-a-Bear Workshop (HQ) all follow a 'bring your dog to work everyday' policy. In Canada, PIJAC, Procter & Gamble Pet Care and Pets Plus Us are among the pet friendly organizations catering to two and four-legged employees
