WELFARE - It's National Dog Day

National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure.

It was founded to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep people safe and bring comfort.

Dogs do truly amazing things for humans - personal protection, law enforcement, assisting the disabled, detecting bombs and drugs, pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, providing formal and informal therapy, and even detecting diseases and seizures.

It’s a great day to give your dog some extra love and attention, a new toy, special treats or an extra walk.

Some National Dog Day suggested activities include:
  • Adopt a dog
  • Donate blankets or other supplies to an animal rescue organization
  • Take photos and enter the National Dog Day photo contest
  • Give your dog a massage
  • Teach your dog a new trick
  • Send a dog related gift to a friend or relative

Today is National Pet Day

Celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige founded National Pet Day in 2006 to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe.

This day is all about appreciating and celebrating the wonderful pets in your life.

Ways to celebrate national pet day:

  • Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to care for the animals.
  • Donate blankets, food and toys to a favorite animal welfare organization.
  • Spend the day taking photos of your pets and then post them on the National Pet Day Facebook page!
  • Assist an ill, elderly or a financially struggling neighbor or friend by purchasing pet food, hay or needed items for their pets.
  • Buy your pet a fun new toy....or two...or five.
  • Hire a professional pet photographer for a fun photo shoot.
  • Take your pet for a walk, run, hike or play a favourite game with them.
