It
was June 2005. The news of that time provides perspective:
- Shares
of major airlines fall as oil nears $60 a barrel.
- Second
case of mad cow
disease confirmed in United
States.
- Steve
Jobs, CEO of Apple and Pixar Animation, delivered his famous commencement
address to Stanford
University.
- Operation Red Wings, which
gave rise to the 2013 film 'Lone
Survivor' was unfolding in Afghanistan.
- Asafa
Powell became the world’s fastest man.
- Bill
C-38 placed Canada on
track to become the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage.
- After 5 days of non-stop rain, the city of Calgary declared a state of emergency, the Elbow River spilled
over the dam for the first time and the towns of Bragg Creek, High River,
Okotoks and Sundre were evacuated.
It was against
this back-drop that industry leaders attended a Summit in the PetLynx
Corporation boardroom to discuss strategies that might mend a dysfunctional
Urban Animal industry. Later, in October a Summit of sponsors was held in
Banff, Alberta, to gather funding for something called the Urban Animal
program.
Nine years have passed
but today, we can see the evidence of a vision that is now supported by more
than 1,700 subscribers to the Alliance for Urban Animals™ across North America.
Next year this Alliance will celebrate a decade of service to communities and the
ongoing effort to create a better experience for pets and people in Urban Municipalities.
The next chapter of
Urban Animal™ begins today with the launch of a new website. We invite you to learn
how to disagree productively. We invite you to join a positive, and encouraging
animal culture. We invite you to add your passion and resources to building
healthy communities for all urban animals. Let’s put the ‘people’ back in ‘pets
and people’ where we all live!
