Ontario SPCA brings 100 Years of Humane Leadership to Urban Animal

PetLynx Corporation is pleased to welcome the Ontario SPCA as a sponsor of the 2015 Urban Animal program.

For over a century, the Ontario SPCA has provided leadership in matters relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals and in the encouragement of humane animal care.

The Ontario SPCA has been involved in the Alliance for Urban Animals for the past decade as a presenter of facts and research, a program developer and an innovator of new and novel humane activities. For the past six years Ontario SPCA has also been a sponsor of the Urban Animal program.

“The Summit for Urban Animal Strategies has been instrumental in both starting and changing the conversation as to how we, together as stakeholders, provide broader integration and enhanced care of animals in communities,” said Kate MacDonald, CEO of the Ontario SPCA.  “When we come together to create and foster positive outcomes, animals, people and communities benefit.”

As Canada's largest humane organization Ontario SPCA has an influence well beyond its provincial borders. During the 10th year of the Urban Animal program, Ontario SPCA is once again leading members of the Alliance for Urban Animals by facilitating the important conversation about Compassion Fatigue.

“Many have benefited from the leadership of Ontario SPCA. Their remarkable achievements have enriched the lives of people and pets across North America through the Summit for Urban Animal Strategies”, said Larry R. Evans, Executive Producer. “We are grateful that Kate MacDonald and her colleagues would sponsor this program, share their experience and lead Alliance initiatives. It has been a game changer for Urban Animal and for collaboration in the industry”.

Dog Theft Story Uncovers Large Pet Owner Concern

The story of Chocco, the dog stolen near Fort St John, British Columbia, has uncovered an issue that requires attention from those who own pets.

Within 10 days of Chocco’s story being posted and the launch of the Facebook Page Stolen Dogs 911, the story spread across Facebook with a post reach of more than 200,000 Facebook users. A look around the world shows a growing trend in the incidence of dog theft:

The British Pet Theft Census found that 20% of pet owners had experienced theft of a pet in their lives and only 54% were able to track down their pet. On the issue of tougher penalties for pet thieves, one pet owner stated “Pets are not inanimate objects like TV’s or computers, they are our family members that are being stolen”.

Existing service providers in most communities have limited resources to commit to pet theft or dangerous and disruptive animals. For this reason, PetLynx Corporation has agreed to support stakeholders in Fort St John as they develop a pilot program that will:

  • Identify and register every pet at risk in the Peace Country.
  • Develop a peer to peer based program called HomeSafe Guardian™ that is patterned on ideas learned in ChildFind, Block Watch and Citizens on Patrol and is intended to increase the resources committed to eliminating stolen/lost dogs and other pets in communities.
  • Develop a funding model for supporting research of these issues
  • Develop a funding model for supplying resources to the Alliance for Urban Animals and the HomeSafe Guardian™ program
  • Create a template that can be replicated in the estimated 3,400 communities across North America that have similar needs.

Anna MacNeil-Allcock from PetLynx Corporation and Summit Alumni Bonnie Isenberg from Fort St. John, Bylaw Services, have been asked to champion this development.

PetLynx Scraps Regional Conferences

‘ACTION’ is the DNA of the Alliance for Urban Animals

PetLynx moves from an education and conversation conference to a new structure which favours an Action and Adjudication approach to the 2015 Urban Animal program in each Region.

In 2015, Urban Animal celebrates 10-years, countless dilemmas identified and conversations between industry sectors that now take place on a daily basis. Leaders of the industry work together to create healthy communities for pets and people. The first decade of the Urban Animal program moved the industry away from the fatigue and scarcity that threatened stakeholders to a new environment of abundance.During the next decade, PetLynx intends to use this foundation of new relationships, conversations, resources and trust to focus the Alliance for Urban Animals on ACTION.
Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one's thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German Philosopher
To bring about this change, the dates of Regional gatherings will  be moved to later in May and June. The format will shift focus from education and conversation to ACTION and ADJUDICATION. Innovators, Emerging Leaders, Researchers, Digital Journalists and those competing for Summit Awards will continue to be identified by their peers in each Region. Each of these nominees will appear before a panel of adjudicators chosen from Alumni, Mentors and Advocates in each region. This panel will select those receiving scholarships to attend the annual Summit for Urban Animal Strategies. The ACTION COUNCIL of the Urban Animal Foundation will confer these scholarships in a process aimed at bringing the top nominees in North America to present to the 2015 Summit for Urban Animal Strategies in October.

ACTION will keep us relevant and focused on delivering positive pet experiences to the communities and the people we serve!

ADJUDICATION will ensure Urban Animal scholarships are invested in the best ideas and people to drive successful Urban Animal programs.

REPLICATION of the projects moving forward in the Alliance for Urban Animals and supported by the Urban Animal Foundation will now focus on assembling peers with the passion and resources to deliver a successful North American initiative. The Replication  activities of the Urban Animal program will operate independently as the ACTION element of Urban Animal. A review of the most successful Urban Animal program for Cats showed a four year emergence from 2009 to 2013 and specific elements that contributed to this success. This template will be further refined to ensure successful initiatives move forward each year.

STAY TUNED to InfoStream and UrbanAnimal.com for date and Action Council announcements

Return to Owner Video by Budweiser Nominated for a 2015 Summit

Bravo Budweiser!

The 2015 Superbowl ad by Budweiser features the emotional stress of a lost family member and a wonderful Return to Owner (RTO) outcome. Featuring the Twitter hash-tag #bestbuds, the 2015 Budweiser ad campaign is the latest in the Budweiser series featuring dogs. All videos communicate positive and responsible animal messaging. The 2015 video clearly shows the threats facing animals when they become separated from the care givers who love them.

Statistics show their are more than 100 million cats and dogs in North America. Most dogs and cats are separated from their families at least once in their lifetime. Members of the Alliance for Urban Animals seek to eliminate return to owner problems by registering every cat and dog in the HomeSafe(tm) automated RTO service.

Bringing this emotional episode to the attention of the largest television audience around the globe will help educate viewers about the need for an automated Return to Owner service.

Budweiser is nominated for a 2015 Urban Animal Summit as the 2015 Communicator of the Year.

Kijiji removes 'free' pet listings

Earlier this year, Canada's largest online classified service, Kijiji, announced it would begin charging $4.99 for all dog listings on its site. The measure was taken to provide Kijiji with additional information to assist in actions against illegal pet vendors.

Last month, Kijiji took this campaign one step further when it announced it would cease "free" animal listings altogether.

"It is important to us that every day Canadians have a way that they can safely rheum their family pets," said a Kijiji news release. "But we are making this change to ensure that everyone who adopts a pet on Kijiji is doing so because they have thought long and hard about their lifestyle and whether they can handle the responsibility of providing a home for a pet."

Both the decision to charge a fee for listings as well as eliminating free postings were the result of consultations with community members and animal welfare organizations across the country.

Alliance for Urban Animals extends support to Puppy Project

Louis McCann
InfoStream Guest Author

Some of you recently attended the 9th Summit for Urban Animal Strategies, in Alberta, Canada. Its mission is to support and develop successful strategies for urban animals and to provide recognition for those who lead.

One such leader in attendance this year was Eileen Higginbotham, a special education teacher from Prince Edward Island. Eileen came to the Summit as part of this year’s Innovation Showcase to present her program, The Prince Street Puppy Project.

The Prince Street Puppy Project was started in 2011 at Prince Street School in Charlottetown, PEI. Every day, specially selected dogs would come to the school to interact with and engage students. Ms. Higginbotham was able to demonstrate how her program used integrated animal experiences to promote leadership and build empathy amongst the participating students. She explained how her approach instilled confidence, enhanced cooperation and fostered problem solving skills. It also had a profoundly positive effect on the students who struggled most, by helping to create incentives to work hard and giving a sense of belonging at the school.

Delegates quickly realized the significant impact her program had on students with special needs. You can imagine the shock the delegates felt when we were informed that the Prince Street School initiative had been stopped due to lack of policy.

As members of the Alliance for Urban Animals and on behalf of their close to 1800 like-minded colleagues across North America dedicated to creating healthy communities and positive experiences with companion animals, the OSPCA and PIJAC Canada decided to take action.

In a letter to the Honourable J. Alan McIsaac, PEI Minster of Education and Early Childhood Development, we expressed our surprise at such a project having been put on hold. In our opinion, a project like this one fit perfectly under the Minister’s Directive on Special Education, which seems to guarantee the use of “alternative initiatives” such as this one in service to the province’s students with special needs.

We also noted that Ms. Higginbotham’s program should be a great source of pride and inspiration to his ministry, the government and the entire province. Having won a provincial award, regional and national recognition (runner up to Innovator of the Year award and designation of Urban Animal Mentor) and being the model for other similar programs in Nova Scotia reflects well on the province’s innovative ways. We invited the Minister to contact the Alliance for Urban Animals for assistance in addressing the concerns that may have been expressed on this program.

The Alliance for Urban Animals needs to voice its support of projects like the one put together by Ms. Higginbotham, emphasizing the importance of such an approach in enhancing the quality of education for students with special needs. We believe that a positive pet experience is instrumental in improving the learning experience of these students.

We can only hope that a solution can be brought forward to re-instate this life altering educational curriculum and provide these exceptional students with the tools they need to learn and grow.

Alliance for Urban Animals pairs service dogs with veterans

Today, Canadians pay tribute to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who serve(d) our country.
We honour the countless deaths in the name of freedom and consider the individuals who narrowly escaped death and walk among us, veterans with harrowing memories haunting their everyday lives.

During the Innovation Showcase at the 2014 Summit for Urban Animal Strategies, Cpt. Medric Cousineau presented delegates with his compelling story of hope which elicited tears and a standing ovation for the retired air force hero. That evening, during the Urban Animal Foundation Dinner, OSPCA Executive Director Kate McDonald and City of Edmonton's James Wilke challenged delegates to create a movement to help more veterans find peace.

Members of the Alliance for Urban Animals and delegates stepped up to the challenge, pledging $14,000 in donations to purchase and train Service Dogs for veterans.

Nearly $4,000 in cash was collected and presented to Cousineau when the Summit wrapped on Saturday, October 25. Another $5,000 pledged by Pets Plus Us, $3,500 pledged by Petsecure, $500 from the Ontario SPCA and $500 from PIJAC Canada will provide FOUR service dogs to soldiers and veterans suffering from mental health issues.

"Over the years, we've seen a number of good news stories emerge from Summits. The monetary pledges to support Service Dogs was unexpected and created a true camaraderie between delegates," said Larry Evans, Executive Producer of the Summits for Urban Animal Strategies. "It is this kind of collaboration and transparency that will drive the Alliance for Urban Animals forward."

It takes an estimated $3,500 to train and care for a single canine until it is ready for service.

PetLynx commits $30 Million to Urban Animals in Canada

PRESS RELEASE

PetLynx is moving forward with its mission to identify
every pet in Canada.

Calgary, AB - PetLynx Corporation created the first automated Return to Owner system in 2006 and reached critical mass by registering the millionth animal in 2014.

In keeping with the  mission to identify and register every pet in Canada, Thomas R. Trifaux, Board Chair, PetLynx Corporation, announced a plan to save Canadian pet owners $30,000,000 during the INNOVATION Keynote address at Summit 2014. The response was overwhelming: The Alliance for Urban Animals selected ‘identifying every pet in Canada’ as the 2015 industry wide initiative; and, Members of the Alliance committed to register one million pets through their programs and initiatives by the next Summit for Urban Animal Strategies in October, 2015.

“With two million registered users by next fall, the industry neutral PetLynx registry will protect pets, serve pet families and improve economic opportunity across the entire Urban Animal community,” said Trifaux. “The PetLynx commitment to identify every pet in Canada within this decade is a ‘moonshot’ statement like the one made by President Kennedy in 1961 to put a man on the moon.”

PetLynx serves pet owners as well as Alliance members who operate shelters, kennels, retail stores, clinics, hospitals, licensing agencies. Alliance members serve more than 340 Canadian communities. Members can reserve a portion of the $30,000,000 in products and services for their clients prior to January, 2015.

“The response we have received from dozens of industry leaders has been overwhelming,” said Drew Van Niekerk, President/CEO, PetLynx Corporation. “The industry is ready to adopt one central utility that provides an easy, secure and low cost way to protect pets and provide peace of mind for people.”

A PetLynx animal record empowers pet owners and authorized service providers to generate lost/found reports, access health records, record identification, upload pictures and much, much more. PetLynx is the only registry that allows pet owners to store information about their companion and opt-in to services they need. Every month, the PetLynx utility receives more than 33,000 logins, serves more than 2,000 recovery episodes and hosts more than 1.2 million visits.

PetLynx registers 1 MILLION PETS!

The little dog from Prince Rupert, B.C. is HomeSafe (or one of a million)

Wandering alone and homeless on the outskirts of Prince Rupert, B.C., the little brown dog was not aware of how his life was about to change for the better.  The BC SPCA gathered him up and began the routine search for some type of identification. He had no tag, no tattoo, and when they got him back to the shelter, the microchip scanner found nothing. Little did they know that this little brown dog would be a milestone in the world of pet identification.

Meanwhile in Vancouver, a professional couple were finally ready to bring a dog into their lives. Using the BC SPCA website, Zsuzsanna Hollander was able to learn about all of the dogs for adoption in B.C.

She fell in love with the little brown dog in Prince Rupert and she booked a flight to meet him face-to-face.  When asked, ‘what is the rush?’ She replied, ‘he is looking for a family and we are looking for a dog, why wait?’

The BC SPCA found Zsuzsanna to be a perfect match for the little dog but stressed that identification is a priority for him since he had already been lost once in his young life.

As Zsuzsanna stepped off the plane with the newly named Cocoa, she was stepping into the world of pet ownership.

Keeping him safe and sound required some preventative steps. For example,

A plethora of information is involved in keeping Cocoa safe and sound.
First he had numerous identification numbers attached to him, such as a license number registered with the city, a tattoo number registered with the veterinary clinic and a microchip number registered with the microchipping company.

Second, his veterinarian numbers and medical information need to be easily accessible by all his care providers like the doggie daycare, pet sitter, or dog walking service to keep him safe in an emergency.

With all this in mind Zsuzsanna opted to register Cocoa with PetLynx.Net, a database system that holds all his information securely and helps search for him if he were ever lost. Little did she know that Cocoa was the One Millionth pet to be registered with PetLynx.Net

Cocoa’s PetLynx Profile includes all of his identification information (license number, tattoo and microchip number, photograph and written description of unique physical characteristics) as well as the contact numbers for his service providers (Veterinarian, Dog Walker, Dog Sitter and Doggie Daycare and pertinent medical information (allergies, medications, or conditions).

“This is an important milestone that reflects the growth of a mindful pet owning society," said Veterinarian Drew VanNiekirk, president of PetLynx.

Cocoa wears a little green tag on his collar with the PetLynx website and his PetLynx ID Number. If he is separated from Zsuzsanna, whomever finds him can fill in a ‘Found Report’ on the site, and Zsuzsanna will automatically receive an email.

Until he is found, the PetLynx system will automatically search for reports of dogs with similar geographical and physical details. The automated HomeSafe system sees more than 2000 pets returned to owner every month. In total, 300,000.

If Cocoa were to lose his collar and tag, the system will still acknowledge and highlight any Found Reports matching the physical description and location where he was last seen.

"This milestone deserves a celebration," said Larry Evans, business director of PetLynx. "It reflects positive changes in the status of pets in our society. With more than one million pets in the system, it makes sense for humane societies to check PetLynx when they find stray animals."

To celebrate, Zsuzsanna and Cocoa will be presented with a number of gifts from Canadian members of the Alliance for Urban Animals; PetLynx, Pets Plus Us pet insurance, Tisol gift certificate, and Kijiji.

Bringing identification and recovery services to all of Canada

For the past eight years, thought leaders in the Urban Animal industry have worked through the developing Alliance for Urban Animals Program to identify gaps in the urban pet experience. Together they have developed strategies and tactics to recast these dilemmas into opportunities to deliver a better more supported pet owner experience.

Kijiji Canada has been invested and supportive of the Urban Animal Program from the earliest days. Now as Kijiji introduces a Canada wide strategy for pets and pet owners, they share a mission that involves 1,700 like minded collaborators in more than 340 communities across Canada.

In collaboration with PetLynx and Pets Plus Us, Kijiji Canada is making the HomeSafe™ Automated Recovery Service available to every municipality in Canada on a 24/7 basis. One national service for identification and for bringing lost or found animals home safe.

During the next few months  members of the Alliance for Urban Animals will be encouraged to pin their location to the  map of Authorized Service Centres in Canada. Visitors to the Kijiji portal in every community will know who they should trust for assistance.

Will this be end of lost pets, the elimination of irresponsible breeders or a magic bullet to end animal cruelty? Not immediately. However: This service is the result of mindful, respectful dialogue at the Urban Animal Conferences and Summit; This is the emergence of a community portal allowing the Alliance for Urban Animals to support pet owners everywhere; and, This signals the resurgence of a community approach to animal management called CAMStrat™. Using this portal, members of the Alliance for Urban Animals expect to uncover gaps, imagine new services and develop new strategies to support a positive pet experience in each community.

Members of the Urban Animal industry have choices. Some use their online presence to bully, and harass those holding dissimilar values. The Alliance for Urban Animals is for those who choose to develop conversations, expand relationships and offer support to create positive experiences and healthier communities for pets and people.

You are invited to engage and support Kijiji Canada’s new community pet strategy. You are invited to help shape the future by joining the Alliance for Urban Animals.
