INNOVATE - Adopting New Data Strategies for Better Marketing

Last month Google produced an essay on data you need to read

As the essay says, "the volume and variety of data has exploded. Data is no longer rare and hard to gather. It's everywhere and many brands can't keep up".

There is a wealth of information in this essay, and some good survey data too. If you manage a program, identifying the top three things most data programs lack is most important:

  • Lack of confidence. Data storytelling is an art; it’s hard to learn and hard to do. Your team may hesitate to even attempt it. But if technology can begin to find and surface insights automatically, you're halfway to a good result.
  • Lack of trust. "Why should I stick my neck out?" That's the eternal human question. Emphasize to your team that you'll back them up, and encourage them to keep a clear trail of the data that led them to a particular decision or hypothesis for an experiment. Succeed or fail, that data trail will be a valuable learning tool for the next go-round.
  • Lack of time. Making the most of data takes daily time and commitment. Yes, finding free time is always a problem in business. But people who have zero time are guaranteed to ignore valuable data.

Here's the LINK

You may think you can't afford data analysis. You do so at your peril.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
There are many ways to gather data about your online business and customers. Constant Contact gives you a cost effective way to survey your clients. Hootsuite and Google Analytics provide data about your online and social media activities. This is an investment that will pay for itself many times over.

DIGITAL - How to Conduct a Social Media Audit

Measuring social media is always a challenge.

A great tool for digital marketers is a social media audit.

A social media audit is the process of reviewing what’s working, what’s failing and what can be improved upon across your social media channels.

When you conduct a social media audit, you collect and analyze data from all of your social media accounts looking closely at your activity, results, audience, and financial investments.

And there are a plenty of tools out there to help you create a social media audit that works for your company or organization.

Hootsuite has a template for an audit so you don’t even have to create the document - just fill in the blanks.

Social Media Examiner recently posted an article about how to conduct an audit that also has information about the value of the results.

The format of Harvard Business Review’s template - which includes who, where, what, when, why and opportunity - provides a clear and simple result that is easy to understand and develop future goals from.

A Sproutsocial blog post has detailed information to help you determine what you want to include in your template, how to determine the best and worst performing channels, and even reminds you to check your branding across all your digital marketing efforts.

While audits take time, they are important to help keep a business on track and meeting organization goals.

They don’t need to be done weekly or even monthly.

Most organizations complete a social media audit quarterly, twice per year or annually.

DIGITAL - Not Sure What to Post on Social Media?

It’s like writer’s block, but with social media.

Sometimes interesting content is hard to come by and it is challenging not to become repetitive.

To help social media marketers out, Hootsuite has come up with ten content suggestions to get those ideas flowing.

Ask Relevant Questions
Express genuine interest in your audience by asking for their opinion or thoughts on a topic relevant to your industry.

Take Your Audience Behind the Scenes
Is there anything happening that could be of interest to your audience? Even something as simple as a coworker’s birthday celebration can offer an opportunity to showcase your workplace culture, and create a deeper human connection to your brand.

Shine a Spotlight on Your Customers
A good way to show appreciation to your customers, and have unique content on hand, is by promoting customer profiles or sharing case studies.

Share a Reading List
Think about books you’re actually reading or have read recently, or crowdsource ideas from your colleagues - just make sure it’s relevant to your business.

Look to Popular Daily Hashtags
What is trending that day can give you ideas about what to add to your page that is current.

Compile a Weekly Roundup
This can be top news stories of the week that relate to your industry, corporate accomplishments or statistics for the week, or best photos by your customers.

For all the content ideas, including links to more detailed information, read the entire article.

DIGITAL - 20 Free Stock Photo Sites

Challenge for a social media marketer: Finding the perfect image for a social media post or campaign.

(StockSnap)
Big challenge: Finding an image that is free.

Bigger challenge: Understanding different licenses and copyrights of images.

Happily, Hootsuite posted a list of 20 free stock photo sites that will save time and energy in a quest for the perfect picture.

The list includes sites that have Creative Commons Zero (CC0) licensed images.

The CC0 license “enables scientists, educators, artists and other creators and owners of copyright- or database-protected content to waive those interests in their works and thereby place them as completely as possible in the public domain, so that others may freely build upon, enhance and reuse the works for any purposes without restriction under copyright or database law.”

Gratisography contains quirky images by photographer Ryan McGuire.

IM Free offers not only free social media images, but is a “curated collection of free web design resources, all for commercial use.”

Pixabay offers over 490,000 free images for both your personal and commercial use and includes illustrations and vector graphics.

The Morguefile was created in 1996, and offers photographs available free for the use in creative projects with a request to credit the artist.

New Old Stock provide the ultimate “Throwback Thursday” content with their hundreds of vintage photos from the public archives.

StockSnap curates stock photos from around the web and also uploads photos from select photographers in their network.

DIGITAL - More Consumers Using Social Media to Connect With Businesses

One is hard-pressed to make the argument that social media doesn’t matter.

There are few business models left that can’t benefit from some social media exposure, marketing or advertising.

According to studies conducted by Forrester research, adult savviness with respect to social media is on the rise – up three per cent from 37 to 40 per cent.

Other key findings made by the research firm include the discovery that 31 per cent of consumers are in constant use of social media to connect with businesses, a four per cent increase from 2015.

Sixty-nine percent of these consumers buy online and on mobile.

According to Hootsuite, a popular social media marketing and management dashboard, one of the greatest advantages to businesses is building brand/product loyalty:

“A study by The Social Habit shows that 53 per cent of Americans who follow brands on social media are more loyal to those brands.”

For the less technologically-savvy social media user, dashboards such as Hootsuite can alleviate overwhelming decisions of what platforms to use and when, as the ‘one stop shop’ allows users to post using one system to a number of platforms at the same time.

The optimization tools also allow its users to schedule posts ahead of time, therefore optimizing traffic flow and resulting in more targeted leads.

Built-in analytics allow for better tracking to ensure your audience is achieving best results though interacting through your website/social media platforms.

Networking, piggyback advertising and creating repeat business lies in the sharing of content, frequency of use and paying it forward (sharing posts from other industry members, colleagues); this big picture approach has longer-term benefits and helps establish better branding.

Market research indicates more investment into the social media marketplace in the future.

According to Entrepreneur.com: “recent research from Econsultancy shows that 71 percent of brands plan to invest more heavily in social media in the coming year to reach new followers and build brand reputation.”

The blog continues on to rank their top picks for platforms, as they relate to promoting brand awareness, with Facebook leading the pack and appealing to the broadest spectrum of users.

Instagram is ideal for image-based branding – clothing retailers or foodies; Google+ is shaping up to be a good tool for connecting with men in the technology sector (research indicates that two-thirds of its users are men in this industry); Pinterest, much like Instagram, notes higher success rates for women-dominated industries such as clothing and jewelry; and LinkedIn is a strong platform for business-to-business corporate users.

Keep it visual. According to Entrepreneur.com: “Articles with images receive 94 per cent more views. Twitter content with images receives nearly twice as many views as text posts, even though there are seven times more text posts on Twitter.”

Above all, the leverage for business owners in using social media platforms is about creating a level of interaction between their business and users – publishing engaging content, offering freebies, or discounts that entice users to ‘like’ the business page, posting strong visuals – these are all potentially lucrative methods to increase online presence and ensure your business is current.

DIGITAL - Top Social Media Sites that Matter to Marketers

Narrowing down which social media sites are the most important for your organization can be a big challenge. With new ones popping up and the feeling you shouldn’t ‘miss out’ on any of them, it can be overwhelming.

Luckily, Hootsuite has compiled the key demographics for the core group of platforms that are crucial to consider for your social media strategy, allowing you to focus your budget of time and energy where it’s most effective.

They also include a list of companies that have used each platform successfully - giving real-life examples that can only help you create effective campaigns.

Did you know that YouTube reaches more 18 to 34 and 18 to 49 year-olds than any cable network in the U.S and that besides being the second largest online search engine, it is also heavily used as a resource for how-to content?

The New York Times saw a 2.3 times increase in subscriptions through strategic use of Facebook - a platform that over 1 billion people use daily.

Instragram users are two and a half times more likely to click on ads than on other social media platforms. With 75 million daily users, that’s a lot of clicking.

Hootsuite’s post goes into more - very useful - detail about these platforms as well as Pinterest, Snapchat and LinkedIn.
