BEHAVIOUR - Multi-Dog Households: Setting Adopters up for Success

Adding a dog to a household that already has a resident canine can be a challenge.

Whether you work for an animal welfare organization, rescue, bylaw enforcement agency, or pet store that sells or adopts rescue animals, it’s important to
help families create a compatible and peaceful relationship between resident dogs.

The last thing you want is for a dog to be returned because they just don’t get along.

Multi-Dog Households: From First Date to After the Honeymoon, a webinar by Patricia McConnell, talks about:

  • How initial dog-dog introductions can set the stage – for better or worse – for the rest of the relationship.
  • Whether the shelter is or isn’t the ideal place for new or resident dogs to meet.
  • Practical ways to help adopters conduct safe, humane and informative introductions on their own.
  • The evolution of a new social structure – milestones, setbacks and how to help adopters navigate through transition periods.
  • What potential problem situations adopters need to be aware of, such as high arousal areas like doorways, dinner time and managing resources.
  • When to say when – how to determine when a canine relationship isn’t in the best interest of either the dogs or the family.

Free and 90 minutes long, the webinar is available through the ASPCA Professional website.

Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB), author and radio host, will leave you with an enhanced understanding of how to set dogs and people up for success and how to become an advocate and supporter to your adopters.

This webinar recording has been approved by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) and International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) for continuing education credits.

B4 U GET A PET Check Out This New Website

Have you ever found yourself going from site to site, searching for information on getting a pet? Wondering what type of animal would be best for you or how much you should budget for one?

B4U GET A PET was developed with people like you in mind. Created by a group of researchers from the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in Guelph, Ontario, this website is a valuable resource for potential pet owners.

“It’s important for us to choose a pet that matches our lifestyle and expectations so we are sure to find the right personality for our situation and household,” says Dr. Jason Coe, faculty with the OVC Department of Population Medicine. “Research has shown that the success of a human-companion animal relationship is influenced by whether an owner’s expectations can be met by the pet and whether the needs and lifestyle of the owner and personality of their pet match.”

Coe and his team have loaded the website with practical, evidence-based information in an accessible, easy-to-use site.

There is a fun cat and dog quiz to test your pet knowledge and customizable budget forms to fill in that give a clear idea of costs. Information about bringing pets home and introducing them to other animals and children can be found.

The website also provides specific questions prospective owners can ask whether they are sourcing their new pet from a breeder, animal shelter or rescue, pet store, online source or from a friend.

“Regardless of the source, there are a number of questions we should be asking when getting a new pet. We want to make sure we are making an informed decision, because ensuring a lasting relationship even before it starts is in both the pet’s and our best interest,” says Coe.

Not only is the website a great source of information for the potential pet owner, shelters, breeders, animal control, pet stores and others in the animal industry can use B4 U GET A PET as a one-stop-information-shop for their clients.

Bissell and Puppy Bowl Help Animals in Shelters/Foster Care

It’s become a Super Bowl Sunday tradition and 2016 is no exception. Puppy Bowl XII, which promotes pet adoption, is set to air on Animal Planet this Sunday February 7th.

This year, Puppy Bowl teamed up with 44 animal shelter and rescue organizations to fill the rosters of #TeamRuff and #TeamFluff with adoptable dogs. The network also is partnering with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to introduce the Puppy Bowl Hall of Fame to honor legacy players throughout the show and promote the adoption of older "veteran" animals in addition to puppies and kittens.

The Kitty Half-Time Show brings a cat-astrophic San Francisco inspired kitten takeover to the Bay Area. These ferocious felines are on a spree of cat-aclismic destruction as they paw across historic landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf and infamous "Al-Cat-Raz."

Bissell, a long time Puppy Bowl sponsor, is giving an extra dose of adorable to Puppy Bowl viewers on PetHappens.com. Starting at 3 p.m. ET, 10 rescue puppies will be released into an all-white room. Live viewers will be encouraged to tweet or post on Instagram with #PetHappens. Their posts will unlock a series of different messes into the room with the pups.

When all of the messes have been unleashed and the puppies are ready for a nap, Bissell will clean the space and restore it to its original sparkling white condition. Each use of #PetHappens between now and March 31 will trigger a $5 donation (up to $100,000) to the Bissell Pet Foundation to support animals in shelters and foster care.
