BUSINESS - Pet Care Market Predicted to Reach $117 Billion in 2021

Euromonitor International’s most recent forecast for the pet care market predicts it will hit $117 billion in 2021.

In the report, Healthy Pets, Happy Owners: Health & Wellness Product Development in Pet Care, it is projected that value sales will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 2.4 percent at constant prices.

According to the report: “health and wellness has become perhaps the main driver of innovation in pet care.”

Dog and cat food brands abound with products promising to aid weight management, slow cognitive decline in aging pets, or are grain- or gluten-free, natural and organic.

In pet products, natural ingredients and well-being have come to the fore, while electronic gadgets are enabling owners to monitor the activity levels of pets and even play with them remotely.

Euromonitor’s study aligns well with Packaged Facts’ report on the increasing popularity of natural and organic foods for pets, and the Nielson study on the humanization of pet foods.

The report analyzes a variety of factors influencing the pet care market such as:
  • Owners increasing unwillingness to compromise on the quality of food they feed their pets
  • The evolution of protein
  • The growth of internet retail
  • The lengthening life expectancy for dogs and cats and the increased prevalence of overweight and obese pets
  • The growth in pet tech
  • The accelerating pace of humanization.

BUSINESS - US Pet Food Market to Reach $30B by 2022

A recent report by Zion Market Research states the “US pet food market is expected to reach USD 30.01 billion in 2022 and is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 3.36% between 2017 and 2022.”

The US pet food market had a value of US$24.60 billion in 2016.

The report, Pet Food Market (Wet Food, Dry Food, Nutrition, Snacks and Others) for Cats, Dogs and Other Animals: US Industry Perspective, Comprehensive Analysis and Forecast, 2016 – 2022, defined pet food as ready to serve food for pets such as dogs, cats, fish, birds and others.

The predicted growth of the pet food market is based on a rise in discretionary income, the increasing variety of ready to serve food on the market, and continued increase in the number of owned pets.

The National Pet Owners Survey in 2015 indicated around 60% of US houses have pets.

The shift in preference for nutritious pet food over the conventional food is also expected to foster the demand for pet food in the U.S.

The report notes there are almost 300 manufacturers operating in pet food sector in US which in total produce approximately 7 million tons of pet food annually.

Some of the major global players in pet food are Mars Petcare Inc., Big Heart Pet Brands, P&G PetCare, Nestle Purina PetCare, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Diamond Pet Foods, Deuerer, Blue Buffalo, WellPet and Heristo AG.

Harvard Medical School Releases Report: Get Healthy, Get a Dog

The Harvard Medical School is selling Get Healthy, Get a Dog: The health benefits of canine companionship. The health report highlights the health benefits of dog ownership and can be purchased online.

The report overview highlights that dogs offer unparalleled companionship and compiles research that shows that dogs offer health benefits. Some of the key benefits of dog ownership are:
  • Reduces stress, increases mindfulness.
  • Increases the activity of children and helps them feel secure and develop responsibilities.
  • Improves the quality of life for seniors.
  • Decreases isolation and increases social behaviours.

Through petting a dog, people can have lower blood pressure and decrease heart rate. Petting can also have a positive effect on the dog. Just as petting can benefit both parting, obesity and low activity rates often affect people and their dogs. The report has suggestions on how to increase physical exercise.

If someone is interested in getting a dog, the report helps walk people through the process of getting a suitable dog. If someone is unable to own a dog the report also contains information about service dogs and how one can benefit from contact with an appropriate service dog.
