The series of one-on-one interviews with behavior experts will be hosted by IAABC President Mike Shikashio (and others) on their public Facebook page.

Viewers can ask questions of the speakers, get to know others in the field, and have access to these professionals in a relaxed and informal way.

Chats will be 30 minutes long and recorded episodes will remain on the IAABC Facebook page indefinitely.

(Dr.Chris Pachel)
The first live broadcast will be this Wednesday, May 17th at 2:00pm EST and features Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Dr. Chris Pachel.

Pachel is the owner and primary clinician for the Animal Behavior Clinic in Portland Oregon and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists in 2010.

He lectures regularly throughout the US and Canada, and has taught undergraduate and professional courses in veterinary behavior at the University of MN and at the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Times and dates for future IAABC Behavior Live episodes are to be determined and will include Alexandre Rossi, Dr. Susan Friedman, Kristyn Vitale, Steve Dale, and other animal behaviour professionals.

The IAABC was founded in 2004 with a goal to standardize and support the practice of companion animal behavior consulting, while providing resources for pet owners needing advice.

DIGITAL - Facebook Launches TV Video App

Facebook’s new video app has now launched on both Samsung Smart TV and Apple TV, allowing users to save videos throughout the day and watch them when they get home.

The new app is part of Facebook’s concerted push into the video market.

Having already invested heavily in their live video feature, the app will provide a place where users can go to watch each other’s videos and more easily find other video content.

The move is potentially game-changing, opening up valuable television advertising dollars for the company and allowing Facebook to compete with market dominators like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, and Hulu.

Facebook has already dabbled in live broadcast of sporting events, and is looking at creating original content as well.

The new app isn’t the only video-focused change that users can expect.

Facebook also announced that videos will play with the sound on by default, vertical videos will now expand to fill the screen, and videos will continue to play in a thumbnail window while users continue to browse.

These changes are each designed to complement the new video app, and make Facebook a destination for users who want to watch, and share, video content.

However, the launch of the video app corresponds tragically with breaking news about arrests related to a rape streamed live on the service late last month – one of multiple such incidents.

A Facebook spokesman told CNN that, "Crimes like this are hideous and we do not allow that kind of content on Facebook. We take our responsibility to keep people safe on Facebook very seriously and will remove videos that depict sexual assault and are shared to glorify violence."

Facebook may need to more comprehensively address the issue in order to prevent these incidents from casting a shadow over their efforts to pull more users into their live video services.

Facebook is far from the only live video service to experience such gruesome content – both Snapchat and Periscope have also been used this way.

However, Facebook is a much larger player in the mobile market.

The company’s efforts to combat fake news have been met with approval by a consumer base tired of constant misinformation.

Tackling the issue of inappropriate content being broadcast on their new video efforts will hopefully also be a priority.

Either way, Mark Zuckerberg believes that video is “a megatrend on the same order as mobile.”

He spoke about the company’s focus on video in an earnings call in March, and stated that the company will continue to “put video first across our family of apps.”

It’s unlikely that Facebook will go head to head with Netflix when it comes to original content or scripted video content.

But the new app, along with video-focused changes and Facebook’s slow rollout of mid-play ads, will certainly offer new advertising revenue, and new services for both users and content publishers.

The Science Behind Canine Athleticism

Have you ever wondered how dogs can jump so high and run so fast - what the science is behind their athleticism?

Purina Pro Plan’s video series ‘Incredible Dog Science’, featuring volleyball athlete Misty May-Treanor and canine athletes, provides some very interesting observations.

For example, if episode two's Jack Russell terrier's body was scaled to the same size as a human, his speed would be the same as somebody running a 2.6 second 100 metre dash.

The three-part series explores the physics, evolutionary advancements, and mechanics of the canine body with analysis provided by experts Dr. David Raichlen, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Arizona, and Dr. Brian Zanghi, Research Nutritionist at Nestle Purina, as May-Treanor competes against Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge competitors.

The first episode, Agility, analyzes the differences in velocity and trajectory between May-Treanor and competitor Schemer, a border collie, as they dart through weave poles.

Episode two, Speed, demonstrates the significant effects that body mechanics play in enabling and inhibiting mobility as May-Treanor takes on the Jack Russell terrier.

Episode three, Power, puts May-Treanor's volleyball skills to the test by focusing on activities like jumping and diving to highlight the sheer strength that propels a dog like the Belgian malinois in its movements versus a human.

While the video series is also an obvious promotion of their dog food, the insight into the mechanics of the canine body is very interesting to anyone curious about how things work, especially with their dog friends.

#CATmageddon - Quit Smoking and Save Cats Lives

It’s a well-known fact that smoking is bad for your health, but did you know that cats living with smokers are twice as likely to get cancer?

Truth, an American anti-smoking organization, is hoping their latest video will encourage more people to quit – if not for themselves, then for their feline friends.

Truth describes themselves as “an unstoppable force of smokers and non-smokers banding together to end smoking for good.”

Rather than criticize smokers, their aim is to provide tools for them to quit and find fun new ways to do what no generation has done before – end smoking.

Their video, with millions of YouTube hits, may help do just that.

A variety of studies have demonstrated the danger of second-hand smoke to animals, but third-hand smoke is also a huge concern.

Third-hand smoke is the gasses and particles clinging to a smoker’s clothes, hair, car, furniture and carpeting that sticks around long after the second-hand smoke has disappeared.

Cats lie on the furniture, carpet and your lap unable to escape from these toxic particles. Then ingest them when grooming.

If Truth is successful and eradicates smoking, cats and dogs will live longer, healthier lives along with their human companions.

Pet Nutrition Assessment Video for Veterinarians

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has produced a pet nutrition assessment video. This video is designed to help veterinarians conduct nutrition assessments and share this information with clients. The video was supported by Hill's Pet Nutrition Canada Inc., Procter & Gamble Pet Care, and Purina.

The CVMA is a member of the Pet Nutrition Alliance (PNA). The PNA includes several veterinary organizations that provide global awareness about pet nutrition. The PNA website provides valuable resources for veterinarians and pet owners. Resources for veterinarians include nutrition assessments, communication strategies, nutritional calculators, and feeding guidelines. Pet owners can find information about understanding pet food labels, nutrition myths, and pet food safety.
