Alberta Spay/Neuter Task Force wins 2011 Summit for Wellnes

Jen Dooley (right) of Petsecure
presents the 2011 Summit for Animal
Wellness to Nancy Larson
The 2011 Animal Wellness Summit was conferred upon the Alberta Spay/Neuter Task Force.  This prestigious award recognized their activities with First Nations communities to mend the relationships between pets and community members.

To help create a more caring environment the Alberta Spay/Neuter Task Force provides teams and a MASH type surgical unit that travels into these communities to spay/neutre dogs and cats and to provide education  regarding basic pet care and dog bite prevention.  They have also been instrumental in assisting band councils to adopt bylaws for humane animal control.

In 2008, they lobbied ABVMA to create a special category for 'Temporary Veterinary Medical Facility' so they could deliver these services in compliance with provincial regulations. Since their inception they have brought services to more than 2,295 animals.

This group is well known for collaborative efforts with other stakeholders such as Calgary Humane Society [their adjunct clinic], the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Olds College, Robertson College and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.  Congratulations to the Alberta Spay/Neuter Task Force for being recognized by their peers across North America.

Vancouver looks to boost dog licensing numbers

The City of Vancouver is hoping incentives will encourage more dog owners to licence their dogs.
Collar tags show licensing

The City of Vancouver is stepping up efforts to increase dismal licensing compliance rates amongst dog owners.
At present, less than 25 per cent of city's approximately 110,000
dogs are licensed.  "Every year, we are getting that number up and
we're hoping this will be another jump," said Sarah Hicks,
Vancouver's animal services manager.
Vancouver's low compliance rates are in sharp contrast to Calgary's, which are estimated at 91 per cent.

Toronto Auditor reports on city licensing

City's pet licensing system is a hairy mess

According to a report from the city's auditor general's office, Toronto is a very bad city when it comes to enforcing its bylaw requiring that dogs and cats carry licenses.

But auditor general Jeff Griffiths differs with KPMG, which recommended scrapping the controversial licensing fees, and is advising the city's audit committee to get more aggressive in making the city's pet owners compliant with the bylaw.
Currently, the city is collecting licensing fees for just 30 per cent of dogs and 10 per cent of cats owned by Torontonians. Toronto Animal Services estimate by the end of the year, that number will have risen to 11 per cent for cats and 33 per cent for dogs.
"These targets are extremely modest and if achieved will increase revenues by approximately $300,000," wrote Griffiths in the report heading to the Nov. 23 audit committee meeting. "This amount of revenue will likely cover inflationary cost increases only. In our view, a much more aggressive target projection should be established."

Police called after SPCA board fired in Sydney

Patsy Rose was let go from her post as manager at the Sydney SPCA. Patsy Rose was let go from her post as manager at the Sydney SPCA.

Police were called to a Cape Breton animal shelter Wednesday after the board of directors was disbanded and the manager allegedly locked herself into her office.
The Sydney branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had faced criticisms over deficiencies in animal care and a lack of adherence to policy and governance. The Nova Scotia SPCA dismissed the board this week.
Kristin Williams, executive director of the Nova Scotia SPCA, said
she called Cape Breton Regional Police to the shelter after
informing manager Patsy Rose she was being let go.
"When I spoke with Patsy Rose, she became quite upset and she actually locked herself in her office. I was actually very, very
concerned, so I contacted the local police to intervene and
make sure she was OK," Williams said.
At the time of the visit the Cape Breton SPCA had about 40 dogs in
wire cages.
"And our main concern with this branch is that they have not been providing suitable and adequate care to these animals,"
said Williams.

New hope for Feral Dog Populations

Lisa Milton presents 2011 Summit

Dr. Judith Samson-French appears on the cover of the recent issue of CitizenPet, the Journal of Animal Companionship.  She also recently won the recognition of her peers in North America as the recipient of the 2011 Summit for Product or Service Innovation.

What has garnered all of this attention?  Quite simply, a pilot project that may help communities across North America to control unwanted feral dog populations.  Dr. Samson-French reviewed scientific literature that described the use of Deslorelin, a contraceptive implant.  Her program is using this implant as a quick, non-surgical, cost effective way to suppress reproduction in feral or semi-feral female dogs.  Her program is the first in the world to control the feral dog population using this intervention with female dogs.  If this program works for the First Nation Reserve Animals in her program, it will work everywhere in the world and it may help solve the really big problems in other countries where access to veterinary hospitals for spay and neuter programs is not common.

Social Communication - Is this the Calm before the Storm?

Virtually everyone knows Social Communications has impacted our culture, our politics and our economy.  But do we understand where along the development curve of these new technologies we stand today.  Gary Vaynerchuk has brought forward a new book called The Thank You Economy - The Power of One on One Attention.

He suggests the DNA of our grandparents was much more aligned, more human, and more likely to be successful than many of those who control business today.  The big companies are scared because they don't understand how they will scale human to human interaction and understanding.  Vaynerchuk suggests that humans can and do scale once they are connected.  For instance, if Nike says something to you in advertising you may accept it or not, but if your uncle recommends something or someone, that is very useful and accepted information.

This is powerful and very interesting!

CKC closes Apex Publishing

This sad little puppy graces the last issue of the Dogs Annual publication from Apex Publishing.  The Canadian Kennel Club has decided to terminate the magazine that was once Canada's favorite canine publication.  According to the  announcement, the December issue of Dogs in Canada will be the last issue of the magazine published.

The September 2011 CKC Bulletin first reported this decision as follows:

At the regular September Board Meeting on Sunday, September 18, 2011 the Canadian Kennel Club Board of Directors was notified by the Apex Publishing Board of Directors that after months of consideration, it has been determined that there is no reasonable expectation of profit for Apex Publishing.

As a result, it has become necessary to close the publishing arm of the Canadian Kennel Club and to reduce the financial burden upon the parent company. The 2012 Dogs Annual and the December 2011 issue of Dogs in Canada Magazine will be the final issues to be published.

Both Ann McDonagh, publisher and Kelly Caldwell, Editor in Chief were recently served with termination notices by the board of directors closing another chapter in the history of dogs in Canada.

The most comprehensive canine magazine in Canada, the 2011 Dogs Annual, landed on desks across the nation this week. Inside readers will find a Cats in Canada supplement and one of the best articles on the 2011 Year of the Cat initiative.

Thanks to Apex publishing, Leslie Smith the Writer, Ann McDonagh Publisher and Kelly Caldwell, Editor in Chief for this wonderful article about one of Canada's most successful initiatives.  As the Year of the Cat Meter clearly shows, collaborators across Canada have identified almost 15,000 cats and assisted in the recovery of many more.

In 2012, Care for Cats will continue as a national initiative with the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association as the lead partner.   All sectors of the industry will assist to distribute the key messaging and online tools which promote routine health care for cats.

The 'CAT' initiative arose out of the 2009 International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies and demonstrates how a collaborative social movement supported with modern social media can achieve healthier communities for pets and people.  Should you wish to increase the awareness and value of cats in your community using this initiative please contact Judi Cannon, Program Manager, at 705.930.7387 or judi.cannon@petlynxmail.com

New Hill's(R) Science Diet(R) Senior Cat Food Receives Top Rating From GoodGuide.com

TOPEKA, Kan., Nov. 1, 2011

The latest addition to the Hill's(R) Science Diet(R) portfolio of pet foods - Senior 11+ Age Defying - was recently awarded the highest ranking by GoodGuide.com, an independent website that provides consumers with expert ratings and information about the health, environmental and social performance of products and companies.

GoodGuide began rating a wide variety of pet food products earlier this year on nutritional performance, caloric content, life-stage specificity and desirability of ingredients.  Hill's(R) Science Diet(R) Senior 11+ Age Defying was given the highest rating (7.4 score).  This is the same score given to other Science Diet(R) products that hold the top rank in all four GoodGuide pet food classifications: dry and wet pet food for dogs and dry and wet pet food for cats.

Introduced in August 2011, Hill's(R) Science Diet(R) Senior 11+ Age Defying cat food is specifically formulated to help cats 11-years or older feel and act younger. Using an exclusive antioxidant bundle that helps defend the body and brain against aging, consumers can expect to see a cat that is more interactive and playful, more alert and agile, and has fewer litterbox accidents in just 30 days. The small kibble is easy to chew and digest, maintaining lean muscle mass typically lost by older cats; while the nutrients supports healthy cognitive function and a radiant coat with fish oil and omega fatty acids. These benefits lead to an overall increase in engagement and daily well-being for senior felines.

"We recognize that receiving a top rating from GoodGuide.com is one of the highest achievements in the pet foods industry," said Liliana Bernal, DVM, Hill's Pet Nutrition. "Passing the stringent review process validates to consumers that Hill's(R) Science Diet(R) Senior 11+ Age Defying is made with breakthrough, quality nutrition that specifically targets the needs of cats as they enter their golden years."

In its explanation of its ratings criteria, GoodGuide recommends that pet owners look for brands that test their foods in accordance with feeding trials established by AAFCO, the Association of American Feed Control Officials. According to GoodGuide, these procedures guarantee that a pet food's nutrient claims are supported by feeding tests with animals, not just formulation. GoodGuide also cautions that the required "Guaranteed Analysis" box on pet food packaging should not be used to inform any decisions about the nutritional quality of the food, suggesting that only the full nutrient profile can provide a detailed and meaningful assessment of what a pet food contains.

Ultimately, GoodGuide recommends that pet owners should consult their veterinarians for nutrition recommendations for their pets' specific health conditions and unique needs.

Google controls 46% of all online advertising

An interesting piece of data from digital marketing guy/VC Darren Herman: Just five companies control 64% of all online spending. (Incredibly, Google controls 46% of all online spending.)
One thing to note, says Herman: "With Facebook only now starting to monetize their platform, you can start to see how big an impact they could have on the dominance of the digital advertising landscape."

2011 Year of the Cat Initiative Surpasses all Expectations

Wow the 2011 Year of the Cat collaborators have blown the lid off this national activity!

Dr. Liz O'Brien and her collaborators had a Vision to increase the value of owned, homeless and feral cats in Canadian communities.

They intended to identify and register 10,000 cats during this year long initiative.  As they start week #44 they have completed 14,614 registrations. In addition, these collaborators have brought the PetLynx automated national recovery system to over 200 communities and assisted in 19,177 cat recovery episodes.

Thank you to Bayer, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Ontario SPCA, PetSmart Charities, Procter & Gamble, Western Financial Insurance, CDMV and the more than 1,500 volunteer collaborators across Canada who have added their voice and resources to support this initiative.  The 2011 Year of the Cat initiative is the most successful initiative arising out of the International Summit for Urban Animal Strategies in its six year history.

Those behind this initiative still have 8 weeks to go before the final numbers are recorded in the 2011 history book. The industry stands amazed!
