Pets Plus Us One Year Later: An Interview with Top Dog, Randy Valpy

Randy Valpy accepted the position of ‘Top Dog’ at Pets Plus Us in January 2012.  In 2013, Randy launched a new pet insurance business model which has proven successful on many levels. InfoStream Guest Author Terri Perrin caught up with Randy in Oakville, Ontario about his own Pet Experiences and how an investment in pet insurance can turn a negative Pet Experience into a positive one.

INFO STREAM (IS): Tell us a little about your pet industry experience prior to joining Pets Plus Us.

Randy Valpy (RV): I was hired at Petplan, which later became Petsecure, in 2001. At the time, I hadn’t owned a pet since I was in my early twenties and I knew nothing about insurance, let alone pet insurance!  My experience was 20 years in sales and marketing for the home furnishings industry. I believe that to be successful in the pet insurance industry you have to have good marketing and business development skills… and I feel that is what I have brought to the two companies I have worked for. In the 13 years I have been in this industry, I have developed a true passion for it.

IS: Why are you so dedicated to the pet industry?

RV: You get hooked on helping people and their pets! Frequently, we pay out pet insurance claims for companion animals that otherwise may have been put to sleep for financial reasons. So, not only does our product help the pet owner and their pet, but it also helps relieve some stress for the staff at veterinary clinics becuase they don’t have to do so many euthanasias. We regularly receive complimentary notes and emails from grateful customers, so we know we are doing good work. It is a great feeling to go home with at the end of every day.

IS: What pets currently share your home?

RV: My wife (who is a veterinarian) and I have three cats and a Lab X German Shepherd. The dog is 110 pounds of excitement and fun! We also had a 19-year-old cat that recently passed away.

IS: Over your lifetime, was there a ‘Pet Experience’ that was particularly memorable, igniting your passion for the pet?

RV: In my life and work, there are two types of Pet Experiences: my personal ones and those of other pet owners. Personally, I love the moment when I come home and my dog is there to greet me or when our office cat, Bruin, is asleep on my desk. And I can’t forget the 13 dogs in the office walking past my desk every day!

Then, there are the individual insurance claims, far too many to count, that cross our desks daily. Not only do we help people who have insured their pets, we look for opportunities to see how we can help those who have not. For example, when I was CEO at Petsecure, there was an assistance dog in BC that we helped. There was a tragic accident when the pet owner was getting on the skytrain. The doors closed before the dog could board and, as a result, the leash was caught in the door. The dog was dragged along the platform, which resulted in a lot of injuries. We covered the entire veterinary bill even though the owner didn’t have pet insurance.

Sometimes we get some press out of cases like this, but that’s not why we do it!  The gratitude from the individual and knowing that we have made a difference in the lives of these animals and their owners is our true reward.

IS: Pets Plus Us advertises that they are ‘Champions of Pet Owner Happiness.’ How so?

Valpy: When you go on our website it doesn’t scream “Insurance!” We are building an online community as a resource for all types of pet-related information and provide tools that can provide peace of mind… to enhance the Pet Experience.

IS: Pets Plus Us is a champion of pet owner happiness for its employees, too. Tell us about that.

RV: Pets are part of our corporate culture. Employees are encouraged to bring their dogs to work and everything about our open plan concept is ‘pet friendly.’ There’s even a sink built into the floor in the cafĂ© (as a water bowl for the dogs) and a bathing station at the front door. We are located in an area where we have walking paths and a stream – hence the need for the bathtub.

At Pets Plus Us we have a community board filled with thank you notes and pictures of us volunteering in the community. In fact, we provide all of our employees with two paid days off per year to volunteer with animal welfare organizations, but in fact, our employees end up giving back far more than this as the majority of them also volunteer their time on weekends.

IS: Pets Plus Us launched a new program model in April 2013. How is it different from previous offerings?

RV: We spent a year really digging into what pet owners were looking for. We learned that people want choices in pet insurance… and value when they aren’t using the insurance. Our new program has customized and simplified the experience. Instead of publishing a terms and conditions (policy wording) pamphlet with small print, we produce a user guide with a table of contents and examples written in plain English so that pet owners can easily understand their coverage. We developed plans that are easy to understand and we also offer stand-alone wellness coverage. The $7500 or $15000 a year of broad coverage resets each year. There are no limits on specific accidents or ailments and no lifetime limits.

Our ‘Blue Ribbon Benefits’ also provide added value — you get something even when you don’t make a claim. For example, our members have access to a 24/7, toll free PetHelpPhone. We also employ a veterinarian/social worker who can provide compassionate care services for those facing the death of a pet. Plus free registration on PetLynx, a subscription to Modern Dog or Cat magazine… and more!

IS: Are you planning to make any enhancements or changes to the current program?

RV: Nothing immediate. While we are receptive to making enhancements, because of all the forethought that we put into our proposition we are happy with it for now and it has been exceptionally well received.

IS: Only a small percentage of people buy pet insurance. What are the actual numbers and why do you believe they are still so small?

RV: There are an estimated 13 to 14 million dogs and cats in Canada and less than two per cent (approximately 150,000) are covered by pet insurance. I believe this is because there is still a general lack of awareness and most pet insurance companies simply don’t have the marketing dollars to do national mainstream advertising.

Pet insurance has only been available in Canada since 1989. In the UK pet insurance has been available since 1940’s and about 25 per cent of pets are insured. In Sweden, it is over 40 per cent. I am confidant that the numbers in Canada will increase with time.

IS: What do you think the industry can do to better promote pet insurance?

RV: All sectors of the industry can promote pet insurance… vets, shelters, breeders, groomers, retailers and more. Remember, it is not really about ‘selling insurance’ but about extending pets’ lives and ending the need for economic euthanasia.  We all benefit from that!

For vets, the benefits of having more pets insured are significant. They can practice medicine based on the best interest of the pet because treatment is not solely dictated by budget.  We need vets to introduce and recommend pet insurance and pet owners will follow up.

IS: Thanks for all the information Randy, we look forward to seeing what Pets Plus Us accomplishes in 2014!

Korea sees sharp increase in pet spending

South Korea reported a 20.9% increase on pet spending in August 2013 over the same month last year. Data collected from the Credit Finance Association showed spending at pet shops and veterinary clinics amassed an ₩83.1 billion ($77.7 million US) purchase totals.

The demand for pet-related insurance programs also gathered ground this year, implying the growing presence of pet-related instruments in the country's financial sector. Two reporting insurance companies  announced policy increases of more than 400 subscribers in the past year.

Market watchers said the rising amount of pet-related transactions with plastic cards came as more cardholders adopted companion animals amid the increasing number of one-member households in South Korea.

Petsecure promotes Pet Health Insurance Month

Veterinary clinics across Canada are partnering with Petsecure pet health insurance during the month of September to raise awareness on the benefits of insuring your pet.

Participating clinics will be decorating waiting rooms to promote and increase awareness which, according to a survey from Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Magazine, can mean the difference between life and death. The survey found pet owners choosing euthanasia for economic reasons is not uncommon.

"When a dog or cat with a treatable condition is euthanized because of economics, the situation can be devastating," said Colleen Skavinsky, chief veterinary officer at Petsecure. "Not only for the pet parents, but also for the hospital staff who have devoted their careers to keeping pets healthy. Pet health insurance allows pet owners and veterinarians to make medical decisions based on what's right for their pet without the worry of financial constraints."

APPA Projects Pet Health Insurance to Grow at 13% per Annum

Pet Health Insurance is emerging as a viable and sustainable sector and many U.S. and Canadian start-ups are turning to the numbers when they consider their next business move.

The American Pet Product Association estimates the size of the North American pet insurance industry is close to $500 million, with an average growth rate of 13% each year. The industry is forecast to grow organically as consumers and companies become more familiar with pet insurance brands and opportunities.

In Canada, Wal-Mart (2012), PetPlan (2012) Pets Plus Us (2013) are new to the pet insurance market. In the United States, Cabelas (an outdoor outfitting retailer) began offering pet insurance in 2011 when it discovered Cabelas customers, outdoor and hunting enthusiasts, wanted to take care of their pets as well.

According to Veterinary Pet Insurance (VIP), the oldest and largest pet insurance provider in the U.S., pet insurance is successful as more and more people consider pets as members of the family.

Pet insurance companies are also seeing an increase in the number of policies offered to employees as part of their insurance package. More than 3,000 companies offer VPI pet insurance, including one-third of the Fortune 500 companies.

RSA Canada reports strong growth at half year

Royal Sun Alliance (Pets Plus Us) reported another strong financial result with 15% growth in net written premiums to $1,360 million compared to $1,181 million in the first half of 2012.

Commercial lines premiums were up 14% to $468 million with all lines of business contributing. Excluding the acquisition of UC, the Commercial portfolio grew 5% with particularly strong results within Global Specialty Lines.

Personal lines premiums, including Johnson Inc. were up 16% to $892 million, driven by the benefits of the acquisition of UC. Growth was 5% excluding UC, with a strong contribution from the Broker business, particularly in British Columbia and improved retention across the book.

The underwriting result of $23 million was inevitably impacted by severe weather, namely late June's flooding in Southern Alberta, which is exected to be one of the largest natural catastrophes in Canadian history. Gross claims in respect of this event are above reinsurance retentions, leading to a maximum net loss of $75 million. As a result, the COR was 98.7%. Excluding the impact of the Alberta floods, the COR was 93.3%.

Interview - Randy Valpy, VP & Managing Director, Pets Plus Us

Randy Valpy (RV) is one of Canada's best known industry leaders. Last year, Randy accepted the challenge to create a new division of RSA (Royal and Sun Alliance). Pets Plus Us is the newest entry into Canada’s pet health insurance market. InfoStream caught up with Randy at the new headquarters for Pets Plus Us, just west of Toronto.

InfoStream (INFO): A year ago we visited with you just after you accepted this new position. So the first question should be; What have you discovered about Pet Health Insurance
during the past year

RV: Well, first of all, we conducted insight panels with vets, pet owners and other industry experts and we learned there are many 'white spaces', that is, places where there is an opportunity to add value to pet owners. Second, we discovered pet insurance isn't perceived as a positive addition to most pet families because of deep seated negative perceptions. Finally, the most important thing we learned was that an increasing number of pet owners are proactive and responsible; They want to get it 'right' but they don't always have the resources at their finger tips to make the best decision.

INFO: Last year we noted that pet insurance in Canada had a market penetration of about 1% which translates into health coverage for around 150,000 pets. This performance seems somewhat dismal for an industry that has been working at it for more than 20 years. What kind of negative perceptions did you uncover?

RVPet families are skeptical about health insurance for their pets. They hear a lot of 'no'; they expect the 'fine print' to squash their coverage; they think underwriters stack the deck against them; and, they find it hopeless when they aren't allowed to choose from a list of treatments and coverage they might like to have. Moreover, these perceptions often become their reality just when they experience a pet crisis and need a helping hand.

INFO: Wow, no wonder pet owners feel negative.  But how do you think you can turn these perceptions around when you have profits, low loss ratios and financial performance to achieve?

RV: Sorting this out required market research, lots of listening and a substantial investment in modeling what we had discovered. In the end, the solution turned out to be simple. We need to focus on supporting the pet owner, becoming their ‘best friend’, the ‘house of yes’, the place they turn when difficulties are encountered and the community with whom they celebrate the wonderful things they enjoy about their pet.
INFO: When we listen to you, we hear your excitement and we wonder if this is something that can power–up an industry which has not often been ‘pet owner centric’. Can you elaborate on the essential elements?

RV: We call these elements ‘instincts’ and we expect them to guide our day-to-day activities:
  • We want to be people lovers and pet lovers – happy pet owners mean happy pets and vice versa.
  • We want to be excited when we encounter challenges and ask, ‘What would Rin Tin Tin Do’?
  • Like ‘service animals’ we live to serve the community of pet owners.
  • We believe in the ‘Power of the Pride’ – it’s not about me, it’s about we, it’s about us, it’s about them.
  • We want to keep it ‘Wild’ because we know that innovation can drive the industry and fuel our growth.
INFO: This sounds good but lots of good ideas have come and gone.  How do you intend to keep your staff and colleagues focused on delivering these instincts?

RV: One of the things you can observe in great companies is a kind of corporate DNA, ‘the genetic propensity to behave in a certain manner’.  RSA is more than 300 years old and is committed to keeping people moving forward.  The way I have described our instincts is fresh and new, but you can see the company has maintained many of these traits over a long and very rich heritage. RSA reaches beyond itself to illuminate global situations from Polar Bears to Rain-forests and even provides emergency response capabilities to flood victims. At RSA, our reputation, our purpose and our beliefs will attract like minded people. The Pets Plus Us environment will nurture and celebrate ‘Best in Show’ elements that deliver positive impact while eliminating the ‘Pet Peeves’ that become barriers to success for us, the pet owner and the industry.

INFO: Randy, your literature shows you are ‘on a crusade to champion pet owner happiness’. Why would you take on moving the industry toward this goal and how do you think it can be accomplished?

RV: The why is easy. Every insured pet, regardless of who insures it, is a safe pet. The day always seems to come, when the pet needs insurance and that is the day pet owners are happy they had foresight to purchase insurance. The how is a bit more complicated, but it’s not hard. For 11 years I have encouraged and supported those who say that we need to work collaboratively to achieve pet owner happiness. As a founding member of NAPHIA, I worked with other members to bring the North American insurance industry into alignment. I also helped found the Summit program which gathers up like minded collaborators across North America to create healthy communities for pets and people. Pets Plus Us will intensify and strengthen this crusade for Pet Owner Happiness.

INFO: So what's next?

RV: Over the next few days, the OVMA convention will serve as our ‘coming out party’ and give us a chance to introduce the Pets Plus Us brand to the industry. Sometime in mid-February, we will introduce a full complement of accident and illness coverage. Later we will introduce new wellness products that allow veterinarians to establish conversations and services with pet owners who desire a program of regular visits to provide a better quality of life for each pet. However, I am most excited about the new Pets Plus Us Pet Owner Community that provides pet owners with Air Miles™, resources, subscriptions, forums, blogs, a photo album and support for conversations with other pet owners.

INFO: Congratulations Randy! Pets Plus Us has intriguing components that are good for the pet, good for the pet owner and good for the pet industry. Tell us what you believe success will look like?

RV: Our ambition is to be the fastest growing Pet Insurance Company by 2015 and that won’t be the end, but it may be the end of the beginning!

INFO: Thanks for investing time to update the industry!

RV: Thanks for the investment you make to keep everyone aligned!
