DIGITAL - Research: The Growing Importance of Visual Content

Visual content has become vital to marketing, especially in the world of social media.

A recent study by Venngage surveyed over 300 online marketers and find out exactly how visuals influenced their marketing strategies in 2016, and what their plans were for 2017.

According to the survey, 77% of marketers stated that 71% to 100% of the content they published in 2015 contained visuals. Of that 77%, 40.5% of marketers stated that 91% to 100% of the content they published in 2015 contained visuals.

When asked about their use of visuals in their content strategy during the year 2016, 83.5% of marketers stated that 71% to 100% of their content contained visuals, and 53% of those marketers said that 91% to 100% of their content contained visuals.

This shows an incredible increase of 130% in the use of visual content in articles published by marketers.

41.5% of marketers said that original graphics, such as infographics and illustrations, were the most effective.

Most marketers, 60.8%, stated that the use of visual content was absolutely necessary to their marketing strategy.

Following that, 31.7% said that visual content was very important for their marketing strategies in 2017, however the amount of budget dedicated to visuals remained relatively low.

The biggest challenge faced by marketers was finding time to produce visuals on a consistent basis.

With video growing in popularity and visuals increasing in importance to get and retain viewer interest, marketers will have to continue to allocate resources to them.

Read the detailed results, complete with infographic templates you can use, on the Venngage blog.

DIGITAL - Snapchat Offers New Advertising Features

In an effort to improve mobile commerce and lead generation marketing, Snapchat is testing deep-linking and auto-fill in their ads.

With deep-linking, consumers can swipe up and tap a link to be taken out of Snapchat and into a new app - to a playlist in a music app, or a product page in an ecommerce app.

Auto-fill allows viewers to fill out lead-generation forms with one tap on the screen after seeing an ad.

This time-saving feature addresses the challenge advertisers have getting consumers to take the time to fill out forms, particularly when they are using a smartphone with its small screen and keyboard.

"Snap's new features make its advertising platform more amenable to the type of direct response advertising that could make it a social commerce player," said eMarketer analyst Yory Wurmser. "Mobile retail above all is about relevant, compelling images and simplicity."

Other social networks already have these features so Snapchat is taking steps to catch up to them and stay on top of social commerce in general.

Some interesting statistics for businesses thinking about advertising on Snapchat:
  • Over 100 million active daily users
  • Snapchatters watch over 10 billion videos per day
  • 58 percent of college students would be likely to purchase a brand’s product or service if they were sent a coupon on Snapchat.

DIGITAL - LinkedIn Changes: What Marketers Need to Know

Design changes to LinkedIn are rolling out to account holders.

Many of the updates align the desktop version more closely to the mobile version - making a smoother transition between the two.

The dimensions of the background photo have changed and LinkedIn has made it easier to write posts, find new contacts and interact with connections.

The content sharing section is in the centre of the clean looking homepage and includes an easy to access button to create an article, which is the same as publishing a long-form post on LinkedIn Publisher.

The biggest change is to the Search section which no longer has the advanced search options - you need to purchase LinkedIn Premium for advanced search, saved search and tagging.

The profile section is now called Me - just like the mobile app - and contains a new section called Accomplishments where you can add publications, courses, projects, certifications, honours, awards and patents.

Interactions have been given their own section in the new interface. The section also includes who has followed you, engaged with your content, has a work anniversary or published an article, and more.

Messaging, Jobs and Ads seem to be the only areas that have not been changed.

Vivika von Rosen, author of "LinkedIn Marketing: Hour A Day" and listed on two of Forbes “Most Influential Social Media” lists, has written a comprehensive account of the LinkedIn interface changes for Social Media Examiner.

DIGITAL - How the Brain Processes Different Content

Part of successful digital marketing is determining the best way to share content - should you use video or text, an infographic or graphic?

The answer lies in how the brain processes the different types of content.

Main Path Marketing developed an infographic (which, according to their infographic, is a great way to convey complex data and ideas) to break down common types of content marketing formats and how they communicate information to an audience.

For example, if your goal is to create a relationship between brand and consumer or showcase expertise, written content is a good strategy because the brain naturally attempts to put the reader in the author or protagonists’ shoes.

Check out the full infographic for helpful advice on how to tailor your content strategy - video, blog posts, quizzes, slideshows and more - according to how your audience interprets information.

DIGITAL - Twitterfeed Shutting Down Oct. 31

The popular content distribution tool, Twitterfeed, is closing its digital doors on October 31, 2016.

Content distribution platforms are useful for anyone who uses social media, but they are invaluable for marketers.

Because today’s consumers demand fresh, accessible, relevant content within a digital marketplace that is often saturated with similar content, the effective use of content distribution platforms can allow brands to access large, targeted markets more effectively.

Getting your content to your best audience is the only way to ensure a solid return on investment for your content creation and curation efforts.

Twitterfeed shutting down may be frustrating for its many users – in 2011, when bit.ly purchased the company, it was topping many lists of most-functional Twitter automation tools – but it is far from the only option.

Twitterfeed itself suggests Buffer or dlvr.it, and Social Media Today agrees. Both services are prepared for an influx of Twitterfeed users looking for social media automation support.

It’s hard to find data on why Twitterfeed is closing down, and it’s not at all unusual to see the quick disappearance of tools and platforms that just a year earlier seemed solid.

There are many reasons digital platforms fail, and Twitterfeed itself had some drawbacks for marketers, such as an inability to give credit to authors or to curate the tweets to make sure only optimum content is shared.

It’s possible that Twitterfeed is shutting down because of platform failure or because of user dissatisfaction, but there wasn’t any buzz to that effect leading up to the announcement.

A recent post by Mark Josephson, the CEO of Twitterfeed’s parent company bit.ly, may provide some clues for curious marketers wondering about the platform.

Josephson wrote on Medium that 2011 was a pivotal year for bit.ly, during which they refined their focus and changed direction to allow their business to become truly sustainable.

Bit.ly finally reached profitability in 2015 and now they are positioning themselves to announce new directions and a tightened focus on, as Josephson writes, “becoming the enterprise Link Management Platform that marketers are telling us they need.”

They’re revamping both their free and paid products, introducing a new user interface, pushing further into their existing deep linking tools.

Does Twitterfeed shutting down hint at new developments from bit.ly?

Josephson didn’t mention Twitterfeed directly, but the timing is interesting and bit.ly’s new interface and tool suite certainly hints at new directions in link management and customer experience.

They’re certainly focused on bringing value to marketers, and that’s something to keep an eye on as they move forward this year.

BUSINESS - Taking & Marketing Great Photos of Animals

Nothing sells like a great photograph.

Photos show personality, evoke emotions and prompt action - like adoption or a purchase.

The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Professional  recently published a four part blog - Hit ‘Em With Your Best Shot: Taking Great Photos of Shelter Animals.

Their tips and tricks will not only help animal rescues and shelters, but can also be used by businesses who want to create photos to promote their products or services, and even by pet owners who are hoping for an amazing shot of their best friend.

Part One focuses on getting to know the animal before pulling out the camera.

Some pets are shy of people, some are shy of cameras and it’s important for them to be comfortable and relaxed.

Noises, toys and treats are all part of getting the pet’s attention, but they shouldn’t be used all at once.

Get technical in Part Two with tips about lighting, flash, background, composition and editing - don’t worry, even the most simple of cameras works wonders if the shooter knows about strong composition.

Dogs have more predictable responses to people, don’t mind a change in location and often know some basic obedience which is great for the photographer.

Cats? Not so much, which is why Part Three is all about taking photos of felines.

Patience is what working with cats is all about. Tips include the importance of forward ear positions, waiting for the perfect cat stretch, playing with toys and getting action shots.

After creating all these wonderful pictures, the next step is to post them and get lots of traffic to a website and/or social media page.

The tips in Part Four can “help get 'em from your homepage to their new home.”

Learn about what photos generate interest online, optimal sizing for different social media channels, which image works best for thumbnails and the type of information that should be included right on the photo.

One relevant addition to the tips provided by the ASPCA: for some advertising campaigns, it's necessary to leave space in the photo for written information about the product or service. This is not usually the case when showcasing a pet for adoption.

Why are photos so important?

Hubspot’s blog post, 37 Visual Content Marketing Statistics You Should Know in 2016, touches on just how vital visuals are to any successful marketing campaign.

A few of their stats:
  • Researchers found that colored visuals increase people's willingness to read a piece of content by 80%.
  • When people hear information, they're likely to remember only 10% of that information three days later. However, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retained 65% of the information three days later.
  • Content with relevant images gets 94% more views than content without relevant images.

People are influenced by visuals, adopters are moved by visuals, purchasers are motivated by visuals.

So get out that camera and start shooting - if you can't do it yourself recruit a volunteer or hire a pro - in today's digital world, it's worth it.

BUSINESS - Post-Digital Age Presents Marketing Challenges

Have we entered the post-digital age?

(pexels.com)
Reading this post on a digital device – your computer, smartphone, tablet, or even smart tv – the question of whether humans have entered the post-digital age may seem counter-intuitive.

And, indeed, arguments have been made that it is not the end of the digital age, but the beginning.

David Sable, the CEO of leading global communications company Y&R, believes that “we are only at the very beginning of what’s digital. We wake up every morning to new technology and stunning new applications.”

Sable calls this new technology and its new applications, many of which tie into the Internet of Things to further blend the physical and digital worlds, “digital exponential.”

A Peer Reviewed Journal About (APRJA) is an open-access journal that publishes scholarship on “key aspects of contemporary digital culture” and featured a special issue on post-digital research in 2014.

In that issue, Florian Cramer wrote that “the term ‘post-digital’ can be used to describe… a contemporary disenchantment with digital information systems and media gadgets.”

American tech and market research company Forrester recently hosted Forrester’s Marketing 2016 with a focus on marketing in a post-digital world.

One of the key takeaways from the event was the mantra to “Be human, be helpful, and be handy.” The consumer’s disenchantment with digital information systems is evident here – in most cases, a bot is not the answer.

Whether framing the current shifts as post-digital or as digital exponential, what’s clear is that consumer behaviour is changing.

Trust is built slowly, and lost quickly. Consumers adopt new brands and technology quickly, and abandon them just as quickly.

Consumers are accessing digital information more frequently than ever – 80% of internet users have a smartphone, and within that demographic, 89% of their time is spent in mobile apps.

This is the other definition of post-digital – a world in which digital engagement is so ubiquitous that it is no longer differentiated, because it is fully integrated.

This presents challenges for marketers because although it may be true that digital life is so fully embedded that marketing must seamlessly bridge online and offline, it is not true that marketing strategies have kept up.

Adapting to a new generation of consumers that expects instant results and human responsiveness is an expensive, daunting proposition.

Forrester suggests five key strategies.

Adopt a post-digital mindset (adaptability), understand customers’ moments (responsiveness), win customers’ trust (reliability), engage with customers in context (integration), and lead the change (innovation).

Although navigating the post-digital/digital exponential presents unique challenges, it also presents unique opportunities.

With consumers being online all the time through their smartphones and other connected devices, the opportunities to engage are everywhere.

Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook are all vying for what Forrester’s Carl Doty refers to as “customer moments,” which are fleeting moments of potential marketing engagement. This could be the opportunity to suggest a restaurant or activity, or respond to a customer’s physical location with marketing opportunities.

In these moments, the consumer is already using their mobile device to make decisions, and the marketing opportunity is completely dependent on already being present in the mobile environment.

BUSINESS - Nulo Recognized for Innovation by Forbes Magazine

Nulo Pet Food Inc. was cited as one of the 25 Most Innovative Consumer Brands for 2016 by Forbes magazine, making it the only pet food company to make its way on the list.

“We are honored that the business community recognizes the impact that the Nulo brand is making on the lives of dogs and cats everywhere,” said Nulo founder and CEO Michael Landa in response to making this list.

The company was recognized for its innovative marketing and contributions to ‘improving the way we live our lives’ with respect to consumerism.

Inspired by world class athletes to create premium pet food, Nulo prides itself in its loyalty to its retailers – changing its strategy in 2013 and pulling out of Whole Foods and choosing to focus instead on independent retailers.

Dubbed as a ‘bold decision’ for such a young manufacturing company, the decision to focus on the independent market (with one series line available at PetSmart) has proven to be successful – as the company is looking to triple revenues this year following their 2016 move to use national distributors Phillips Pet Food & Supplies, based out of Easton, PA.

Their success can be tied directly to an industry trend - sales are growing in the premium and natural food category, according to market research company Packaged Facts.

The company’s modern marketing approach includes partnering with 14 Olympic athletes as brand ambassadors at sporting events.

(Natalie Coughlin, Olympic swimmer, with Dozer and She-Ra)

Nulo announced a new ambassador partnership earlier this year, with tennis star John Isner and his dog Magill; Isner ranked second in 2015 at the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour for number of aces served at 1,260.

The concept of ‘food as fuel’ is propelled here with an emphasis of protein-rich, low-carb and the Olympian marketing strategy; this approach is thought to connect with millennial pet owners.

With two lines of pet foods – one for PetSmart and one for independents, Nulo will continue to gobble up the millennial market who, according to Gibbs-rbb Strategic Communications research, is willing to pay up to 31 per cent more for food they feel aligns with their social and environmental values.

Aligned with their Olympic athletes, the ‘Road to Nulo’ provides the Medal Series available at PetSmart and the FreeStyle Series available at independent retailers (both lines are grain-free) to ‘fuel their inner athletes’.
