Atlantic Canada Collaboration Announced

Nova Scotia (Monday, March 28, 2011) – The Nova Scotia SPCA, the SPCA Newfoundland & Labrador, the PEI Humane Society, the New Brunswick SPCA and the Fredericton SPCA have announced a collaborative initiative in support of animal welfare in the Atlantic region. The Atlantic Network is the first such provincial and regional collaboration of this scale in the country.

The network will be focusing on sharing ideas, growing membership and exploring efficiencies and cost sharing. Two specific commitments for 2011 include an Atlantic transfer system, enabling the participating animal welfare groups to assist one another in alleviating intake pressures and addressing capacity concerns. The second commitment is to work towards a reciprocal adoption program, whereby individuals approved for adoption at one of the participating Societies is automatically approved at another. While a formal program is in development, requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

The network meets and corresponds regularly and have already facilitated successful transfers of animals in need of adoption or assistance. Those interested in speaking with the network about opportunities within animal welfare are welcome to contact one of the participating Societies.

QUOTATIONS:

“The Nova Scotia SPCA is very excited to be partnering with other animal welfare organizations across the Atlantic region. Each of us has an important role to play in the protection of animals and animal welfare. By working together, we can create a more compassionate society. Collaboration is essential and this network has incredible potential.”
~ Executive Director of the Nova Scotia SPCA, Kristin Williams

“The SPCA Newfoundland & Labrador is very pleased that Atlantic Canada SPCA’s and humane societies have come together to form valuable working relationships. Information sharing and collaboration will strengthen the animal welfare sector in our region. This is definitely a step forward.”
~ Financial Director of the SPCA of Newfoundland & Labrador, Lynn Cadigan

“As the only animal shelter operating on Prince Edward Island it sometimes feels like we’re working in isolation. Our involvement with the Atlantic network provides opportunities for us to share experiences and to gather ideas and inspiration from our counterparts in the region.”
~ Executive Director of the PEI Humane Society, Kelly Mullaly

“The New Brunswick SPCA is pleased to play a part in this very important Atlantic initiative. This group represents the beginning of a collaborative effort for the welfare of animals in our region. To be a part of this will no doubt make the mandate of the NB SPCA easier to fulfill and save many more animals across Atlantic Canada.”
~ Executive Director of the New Brunswick SPCA, Mike Murphy

“When we work together, we know how much more we can achieve and this is just the beginning. Our collaboration will make this region a national leader in dealing with animal welfare issues. The Fredericton SPCA is committed to working with our Atlantic partners to strengthen our message, to curb pet overpopulation and to positively change the lives of neglected, abused and homeless animals.”

Colgate-Palmolive CEO earns $15.4 Million in 2010

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Colgate-Palmolive Co.'s (CL) Chief Executive Ian Cook raked in a flat salary of $1.15 million last year, but his non-equity incentive plan compensation fell to $3.38 million from $3.45 million last year, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Cook's non-equity incentive plan is a cash bonus based on growth in earnings per share. In addition to changes in pension value, stock and options awards and other compensation, Cook's pay totaled nearly $15.4 million for 2010.

Colgate is coming off of a rough fourth quarter, in which earnings fell 1.1% on lower-than-expected revenue and higher materials costs.

Over the past few years, the company has been working to get out of less profitable household products, such as detergent, with an increased focuse on higher-margin oral-care, personal-care and pet-nutrition businesses. Meanwhile, it is facing more competitive pressure from around the world.

Colgate announced Wednesday its plans to buy the Sanex personal care brand from Unilever PLC (UL) for EUR672 million. It expects the deal to increase its profit by about 1% in 2012 as a result of the growth and efficiencies from Sanex, which will mean higher bonuses for executives again next year.

An OpenSpace message from Karen Dawson

Here I am, learning my way around our online OpenSpace, while preparing to create in-person OpenSpace at the upcoming Regional Summits. It has been fun for me to cruise through the various threads and strands and learn how this medium works. I can already see the tremendous potential as we collect and share our various perspectives and ideas in one, common place.

For those of you who haven't yet experienced a summit or conference (or meeting) that incorporates OpenSpace, I look forward to introducing the format when we travel across Canada meeting you, sharing ideas, and learning what's new, exciting, and important in your respective regions. The possibilities for collaboration are limitless, especially as we all learn how to dive in to the conversations that most interest us, no matter what the medium.

Over the next few weeks I will be checking the online OpenSpace to pay attention to the conversations that unfold and I look forward to engaging in person to forward our collective thinking.

Colgate Acquires Sanex Personal Care Brand in Europe

NEW YORK (Business Wire) -- Colgate-Palmolive Company (NYSE:CL), as part of its strategy to focus on its higher-margin oral care, personal care and pet nutrition businesses, today announced that it has agreed to purchase the Sanex personal care brand from Unilever PLC for €672 million (approximately US$940 million).

that this acquisition will strengthen Colgate's positions in the shower gel and deodorant categories in several key countries in Europe and our overall personal care business in that region.

to Palmolive's natural extracts and skin care positioning, as well as to
our Protex brand which focuses on antibacterial protection for skin."

In connection with the Sanex acquisition, Colgate has agreed to sell its
laundry detergent business in Colombia to Unilever for $215 million.

Mr. Cook continued, "The Sanex acquisition and the divestment of our
detergent business in Colombia are both consistent with Colgate's

Donate to Diabetes in honour of PetLynx shareholder Brent McLean

As you may know, we lost our first shareholder and leading advocate when Brent McLean passed away last summer.  What you may not know is that Brent had been living with diabetes.  Recently we became aware of a plan to honour Brent's life by raising money for the Canadian Diabetes Association.  We believe this plan is something worthy of our collective memory of Brent.

Janice and I have a personal understanding of this disease since my own diagnosis in 2005.  Diabetes is a disease that afflicts over three million Canadians and is a contributing factor in the deaths of more than 41,000 Canadians annually.  It is very likely that you or someone you know have been touched by this disease.  Although, modern therapies allow many of us with diabetes to live a full life, there is still much to be done to improve our understanding of the disease, the factors influencing the onset of the disease and the potential cures and therapies that may be applied to those of us with diabetes.

Chelsea McLean is Brent's daughter and a beautiful young woman who, among other things, is a successful rider on the Canadian Motocross circuit.  For the 2011 spring season she has designed a schedule of races that will honour her father and raise money for this worthy cause.  Because Brent was a friend to all of us and because of his support as a partner we are bringing you this opportunity and a challenge.
Your opportunity is to donate directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association by clicking the 'Sponsor Me' button on the bottom of Chelsea's fund raising page:
Your challenge as a member of the PetLynx team is to help Chelsea 'catch some air'.  Brent never wavered from supporting PetLynx during its emergence, now we have a chance to honour him by supporting Chelsea as she raises funds for diabetes and honours her father.
Janice and I will kick off the campaign with a donation of $400.  We would invite each of you to make a contribution prior to the end of March as circumstances allow.  We will report the amount raised by the PetLynx team in April just before Chelsea kicks off the new Motocross season.  Chelsea has set a modest goal of $4,000. Let's take it way over the top!
On behalf of Chelsea and her family we thank you in advance for your participation.
Yours sincerely,
PetLynx Corporation

AAHA asks why do pets end up in shelters?

Every day in communities across the US a bond is broken. It’s the bond between people and their pets, resulting in millions of pets being surrendered to shelters each year. And little has been known about the reasons why until now.

In a study conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) and published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science (JAAWS), researchers went into 12 selected animal shelters in the United States for one year to find out why.

IBM STUDY SHOWS CANADIAN CONSUMERS EMBRACING MOBILE RETAIL

An annual IBM global survey of 30,000 consumers in 13 countries, including more than 2,000 Canadians, reveals Canadians are adopting new shopping technologies faster than most.

The number of Canadians willing to use mobile technologies to shop increased by 160% year-to-year, second only to the US in uptake. The survey also shows the number of Canadian “instrumented” consumers – who use two or more technologies such as a Web site, mobile device or in-store kiosk – increased by 65% over last year’s results, almost double the global result of a 36% increase year-to-year.

The survey also found that: consumers are checking prices in store, where 70% of final product selection happens, using smart phones and UPC tags to check competitive offerings; and consumers want to shop seamlessly across channels, check product prices wherever they are, get promotions based on the items they scan, and use a personal mobile device to avoid the checkout lane.

Executives in the companion animal industry concerned about the Future of the Humane Movement are invited to attend an OpenSpace on this matter at the Regional Summits for Urban Animal Strategies, 13 - 19 April 2011 in Toronto, Halifax, Red Deer and Vancouver.

Background:
There have been four waves in the development of the Humane movement. The future may be challenging as the internet expands the reach of pseudo Humane organizations who may not deliver any legitimate services in the areas where they raise funds. The companion animal industry has recognized this problem and has come together to develop a solution that will provide official recognition for compliant agencies. A new national seal of approval together with changes to the legislation governing Not For Profit Status may help identify the legitimate Humane organizations.

OpenSpace:
Retailers, Humane Societies, Veterinarians, Breeders, Licensing Agencies, Internet and other Service providers are invited to attend one of four Summits and to participate in a facilitated discussion of the Humane Movement. Patricia Cameron, Executive Director, Calgary Humane Society is leading a conversation that looks at the four waves of the humane movement.

NOTICE - Voluntary Compliance & Best Practices for Breeders

Executives in the companion animal industry concerned about the definition for compliant sources of dogs and cats are invited to attend an OpenSpace on this matter at the Regional Summits for Urban Animal Strategies, 13 - 19 April 2011 in Toronto, Halifax, Red Deer and Vancouver.

Background:
The advent of the internet has allowed non-compliant sources of cats and dogs to escape detection and bring thousands of pets into our communities with homing episodes that are below acceptable standards. The companion animal industry has recognized this problem and has come together to develop a solution that will reduce or eliminate two sources of pets; unintentional and intentional non-compliant breeders; while providing official recognition for compliant sources. A new national seal of approval will help service providers like Kijiji, pet stores and breeders to help pet families acquire a pet from a compliant source with confidence.

OpenSpace:
Retailers, Humane Societies, Veterinarians, Breeders, Licensing Agencies, Internet and other Service providers are invited to attend one of four Summits to participate in a facilitated discussion of the proposed qualifications. Joe Mauro, CEO of the Canadian Kennel Club is leading this national conversation with the support of the other national industry leaders.

Rango brings PetSmart(R) to Champion Responsible Reptile Care

As Rango, the much anticipated animated feature about a reptile,
opens in theaters nationwide today, PetSmart (NASDAQ: PETM), a leading
expert in specialty pets, is encouraging families to educate themselves
about the benefits and responsibilities of being a good reptile pet
parent.

"Curiosity about reptiles will increase among parents and children who
see Rango, and for that reason, PetSmart is excited to be
involved with this movie," said John Gerstenberger, Specialty Pets
Expert at PetSmart. "Our goal is to be the source for the appropriate
education and information about caring for reptiles for anyone who is
considering adding these special pets to their family. From cost and
time commitments to behaviors, nutrition and habitats, our specially
trained pet care associates have the information and expertise to help
people make informed decisions about what pet, if any, is right for
them."

According to Gerstenberger, families should consider the following key
points when thinking about adding a reptile to the family:

Set-up and maintenance costs: Reptiles, like any other pet,
need housing, food and annual health check-ups. Some even have
specific habitat requirements such as special lighting that require
scheduled replacements. Make sure you understand both the immediate
and ongoing costs of caring for a pet reptile.

Living space: All pet reptiles need an enclosed habitat with
enough floor space for them to easily move around and/or climb. Think
about where you want to keep the habitat in your home, and make sure
the habitat is big enough to accommodate the pet reptile as it grows.

Daily lifestyle: Reptiles need fresh food and water on a
regular basis. Because they are kept in an enclosed habitat, time and
attention to the cleanliness of that space is also required. And, like
most pets, reptiles want and deserve your attention. Hanging out and
bonding with your reptile can be the most rewarding part of having
these special creatures as pets.

Families wanting additional information on pet reptiles and their care
can join Gerstenberger in a live chat on March 8, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST. Additionally, families can access breed-specific PetSmart Care Guides or visit the PetSmart reptile microsite or go to their local PetSmart store and talk with a pet care associate.

Hartz Makes Dog Training Easy

Durable training pads and professional tips help pet parents housebreak new pets

SECAUCUS, N.J., March 4, 2011

The average American parent spends almost nine hours a day on work or work related activities, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' American Time Use Survey. Add in time spent doing household chores, caring for others, sleeping, and eating, and parents don't have time to do much else let alone care for a new pet. Oftentimes, new pet owners find themselves searching for time in the day to dedicate to dog training. To help pet parents balance a busy schedule with training a new pet, Hartz Mountain Corporation, a leader in the pet products industry, is introducing Hartz Home Protection Training Pads to help keep households mess- and odor-free. With 12 hours of protection, the pads are constructed to last well beyond the average eight-hour work day.

"Housebreaking a new pet can be difficult - especially if new pet parents don't have the flexibility to rush home during the day and immediately after work to effectively eliminate accidents," says veterinarian Melinda Fernyhough, D.V.M. "When leaving your pet home alone, it's important to have confidence in a training pad, like the Hartz Home Protection Training Pads, you know will keep your house clean and your pet comfortable."

To help new pet owners successfully conquer housebreaking, Dr. Fernyhough is offering the "3-C's" every new pet parent should know:

Containment: When introducing a puppy to a new home, make sure to keep him in a small area with a training pad. By creating this small space, pets will learn the places they are allowed to go without having access to places they are not. In addition, animals usually don't urinate and defecate where they sleep, so they will be more conscious about doing so in smaller places.

Consistency: Follow a consistent schedule seven days a week through puppyhood to create a routine for your new pet. This can be difficult for new pet parents with varying or busy schedules, but planning ahead helps you stay on schedule and provide your pet with repetitive training.

Cues: Be alert of your pet's behavior. While it may take a while for you to learn your pet's ways and for them to you learn yours, often your pet will tell you when it is time for them to eliminate. Some animals will sit by the door, scratch at the door or begin sniffing around the house, so take notice of what your dog is trying to tell you so that you are alert and can counteract any bad behaviors before they happen.

"Hartz Home Protection Training Pads are also convenient for busy pet parents who don't always have time to walk their dog, even beyond the training phase," says Dr. Fernyhough. "With 12 hours of odor neutralizing, anti-leak protection, the Hartz Home Protection Training Pads will give new pet parents peace of mind when leaving their furry friend home alone."

For more pet training tips and information, new pet parents can visit Hartz's Training Academy to access training tips from professionals like Dr. Fernyhough and fellow pet-owners.
