HEALTH - Database Connects Researchers, Vets and Pet Owners

An online database is being touted as a new tool to help connect researchers, vets and pet owners better than ever.

Launched in June, the AVMA Animal Health Studies Database is designed to direct vets and pet owners to treatment options and assist researchers in recruiting animals to take part in clinical studies.

The first-of-its-kind, go-to database will be an alternative to the cumbersome search veterinarians typically endure when looking for clinical trials which may be relevant to patients.

“So having one site where it’s easy for veterinarians and for pet owners to go in and see what clinical trials are available is just a huge move forward,” says Dr. Therese “Terry” Fossum, chair of the AVMA working group and surgery professor at Midwestern’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Arizona.

And the database will include the good and the bad, so to speak.

“Part of the idea is to provide information about whether results are negative or positive and therefore, whether an intervention is worth pursuing,” Fossum says.

“Very few people publish negative results on the whole, but sometimes those negative results are as informative as positive ones.”

While the Veterinary Cancer Trials website is a national database for studies done on cats and dogs, the AVMA site will go further and encompass all fields of veterinary medicine and all species of animals, even including studies on wildlife.

The network will also extend beyond the U.S to Canada and the United Kingdom.

It means linking up researchers, study candidates, vets looking for promising studies and/or trials and pets needing treatment options will be that much easier to do.

Dr. Ed Murphey, an assistant director in the AVMA Education and Research Division, said a prime example of how the database could work is where investigators might want to study a drug, surgical technique or treatment for a certain condition in animals and turn to the online resource to collect samples from animals with a certain condition for DNA analysis.

“There are a lot of AVMA members involved in the conduct of clinical studies, and so, having the database helps them enrol animals into their studies,” Murphey says.
“And there’s a direct benefit to practitioners who are looking for all avenues to help some of their owners and patients ... (the database) will be a centralized collection where it will be one-stop shopping for people with animals with certain conditions who may be interested in trying to find out if there are any studies that may either help their animal or may at least help direct the advancement of knowledge for the condition.”

Animal owners, veterinarians, and anyone else can search the database.

The Veterinary Cancer Society transferred its estimated 100 studies from its Veterinary Cancer Trials website into the AVMA database and there is a call-out to solicit studies from vet colleges.

Dr. Kim A. Selting, creator of the Veterinary Cancer Trials website and AVMA working group member, says good-quality trials rely on recruiting good candidates, an endeavour simplified by the database.

“Sometimes it’s hard to find those cases,” she says.

“We know they’re out there. We know that dogs get a particular kind of tumor or cats get a particular kind of tumor. But either the owners aren’t aware of the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial or they have some trepidation or uncertainty about participating in a trial or don’t understand what all is involved in that with regards to money and time.”

Bark 'n Yapp Helps Owners Find Products and Services for Dogs

A Canadian start-up has launched a website that allows dog owners to meet, connect, research, review and locate products, services and resources to enhance their dog's life.

“We were always looking for good information on where to buy good products, who we could trust to walk our dogs, or where to stay when traveling”, says Galen Udell, Founder & Top Dog of Bark 'n Yapp.

“The best resource was always other dog owners and typically we got this through conversations in the dog park. Our goal with Bark 'n Yapp was to bring together deep and rich local information on everything ‘dog’ to help create a highly engaged community based on trust and peer referrals, just like you get when you talk to other dog owners at a dog park.”

Like other online review sites individuals can rate and recommend different businesses, but Bark ‘n Yapp also gives the opportunity to rate parks, trails and travel options.

Unlike other sites and apps, each dog can have its own profile on Bark ‘n Yapp.

The site launched with over 5000 Canadian locations already in the system and a plan to quickly expand into the U.S.

The mobile app is currently in development.

DIGITAL - 17 Things People Hate About Your Website

You created a website for your business so people can find you, but also to market your services, make sales, develop relationships and build your business.

Did you know that poor user experience can do the opposite? It can cause high page abandonment, low visitor-to-lead conversion and poor organic search positions.

Hubspot Marketing has created a list of 17 things people hate about your website. This list can help when developing a site, but also is a guideline for existing websites to determine how they can be improved.

It takes forever to load
According to a KISSmetrics report, 47% of consumers expect a web page to load in two seconds or less, and 40% abandon a website that takes more than three seconds to load.

It isn’t optimized for mobile
Scrolling from side to side or having to pinch and zoom to read content just frustrates users.

Google announced it would strengthen the ranking of mobile friendly sites so if a site isn’t mobile friendly, it will lose out in organic search rankings.

It offers poor navigation
It’s important for users to easily know where to go and what to do on your site.

It uses excessive pop-ups
How annoying is it to have your reading interrupted by constant pop-up boxes? Many sites are now using slide-in call to action boxes that are less obtrusive.

It contains multimedia content that autoplays
The user is enjoying reading your site when suddenly music starts playing or someone starts talking and they can’t find the button to stop it. It’s likely they will simply close your page.

It’s littered with generic or cheesy stock photography
It's much better to show real pictures of customers, employees, your company, product, and location.

It doesn’t clearly explain what your company does
Steven Krugg sums it up best in his best-selling book, Don't Make Me Think: If visitors can't identify what it is you do within seconds, they won't stick around long.

It contains keyword stuffed copy
Keyword-stuffed copy makes for a bad reader experience. So instead of cramming a keyword in every chance you get, read this blog post to learn the five parts of your website where you should optimize for keywords.

It’s missing social sharing buttons on content
Buttons make it easy for your readers to share your content on social networks because they don't have to manually copy and paste your URL and compose a tweet.

It employs title and headlines that are incongruous with the content
Also known as click-bait. It's important to capture people’s attention in titles, but make sure it isn't misleading and the content can actually live up to what you promised to deliver.

Urban Animal launches new website

It was June 2005. The news of that time provides perspective:
It was against this back-drop that industry leaders attended a Summit in the PetLynx Corporation boardroom to discuss strategies that might mend a dysfunctional Urban Animal industry. Later, in October a Summit of sponsors was held in Banff, Alberta, to gather funding for something called the Urban Animal program.

Nine years have passed but today, we can see the evidence of a vision that is now supported by more than 1,700 subscribers to the Alliance for Urban Animals™ across North America. Next year this Alliance will celebrate a decade of service to communities and the ongoing effort to create a better experience for pets and people in Urban Municipalities.

The next chapter of Urban Animal™ begins today with the launch of a new website. We invite you to learn how to disagree productively. We invite you to join a positive, and encouraging animal culture. We invite you to add your passion and resources to building healthy communities for all urban animals. Let’s put the ‘people’ back in ‘pets and people’ where we all live!
