BUSINESS - Pet Tech Investors are Barking up the Right Tree

Pet technology, and the pet industry in general, has been called “recession proof,” citing the fact that during the 2008 financial crisis, the pet industry continued to grow.

Consumer spending overall shrank by 3% during the recession, but pet spending grew at 5% per year.

Those are some convincing, and encouraging, numbers for investors and business owners.

However, investors should still be cautious.

The resilience of the pet industry refers to the sector as a whole, and doesn’t mean that every pet stock will do well.

Investors need to look at each business as a unique and context-dependent case.

Individual companies can still sink if they don’t adapt to consumer demands and rapidly changing economic contexts.

Fresh pet food companies, for example, are subject to thin margins and increasing competition, and two companies – Freshpet Inc and Blue Buffalo Pet Products – have seen their stocks drop significantly.

On the other hand, pet healthcare companies aren’t subject to the same regulatory and policy debates that impact human healthcare, and these companies are doing well.

Pet technology is an area that’s heating up, and worth a close look.

2016 saw a record number of funding deals in this area, despite the overall drop in Venture Capital funding.

There are multiple factors at play that influence the popularity of pet tech stocks right now.

One important element is the millennials.

This is a generation heavily invested in their pets. They’re less likely than their parents to own a home or a car, but they’re much more likely to own a pet.

According to the Washington Post, “Three-fourths of Americans in their 30s have dogs, while 51 percent have cats, according to a survey released by research firm Mintel. That compares to 50 percent of the overall population with dogs, and 35 percent with cats.”

These individuals are marrying later, having kids later (when they have kids at all), and according to research by Wakefield Research, 76% of them are more willing to splurge on their pets than on themselves.

The economy drives some of these trends.

Pets are less expensive than children or houses, and Millennials have grown up with job scarcity and an abundance of student loan debt.

They aren’t big spenders, and they tend not to take big financial risks.

Their pets fill roles that previous generations have filled with both family and career goals and spending.

The other driving force behind the surge in pet technology stock is this generation’s love of wearable tech, integrated tech, Internet of Things, and other digital age devices and services.

Rover, which was the best funded company in the sector in 2016, matches pet owners with pet service providers such as dog walkers and pet sitters.

And BarkBox, which was similarly well-funded, has experimented with all kinds of digitally-integrated services, including BarkBuddy and BarkCam, marketed as Tinder and Instagram for dogs.

The industry, and the economy as a whole, will continue to change in response to global financial pressures and the quirks of the Millennial generation, but chances are good that pets will continue to be a solid choice for investment.

BUSINESS - Singer Miranda Lambert Creates Pet Product Line

MuttNation™ Fueled by Miranda Lambert collection of pet products from Petmate® is now available at pet specialty and online retailers.

Miranda Lambert
The country music sensation has joined other stars, like Ellen DeGeneres, in the pet product industry.

Lambert is no stranger to the dog adoption cause with her MuttNation FoundationTM that she founded with her mom Bev in 2009, and sales of her pet products will help fund the Foundation’s rescue and adoption programs.

"I am really excited to see all our hard work and great product now available, I hope y'all love it as much as we do. I know my dogs do!" Lambert said in a release.

"I really hope that we can raise awareness to the joy of adopting a shelter pet through our MuttNation product line."

The collection features a country chic feel with a rock & roll flair, vintage prints and antique hardware that are all inspirations of Lambert's signature style.

The product line, which includes bedding, collars, leashes, toys, apparel, accessories, feeding and watering products, is highlighted by the Rescue Mutts collection of six plush dogs.  Each Rescue Mutt is based on a real-life rescue dog with its own story.

Lambert’s collection is likely to ride the pet industry wave - a pattern of year after year growth despite any economic uncertainty - and benefit many homeless dogs.

MuttNationTM provides aid to animals across the US through efforts such as:
  • Spay and neuter campaigns
  • Medical treatments
  • Adoption events, pet transportation, and pet ownership education
  • Mill rescues
  • Legislative changes
  • Service dog training and placement
  • Food and supplies for animal shelters.

BUSINESS - Stores Expand as Pet Industry Grows

Petco is expanding their retail presence having opened five new stores in July and done extensive renovation to 13 Seattle locations.

The Seattle market makeover and new store openings are part of the company's overall goal to significantly expand its national footprint by the end of the year.

At the same time, Pet Supplies Plus has signed 20 deals across the country resulting in 55 new stores this year.

Pet Supplies Plus is the leading pet franchise chain in the U.S. with a total of 360 stores.

Why the expansion and renovation in such a short time?

It’s simple - pet industry spending continues to rise.

The American Pet Products Association (APPA) reported total spending of $60.28 billion in 2015 and is projecting an increase to $62.75 billion this year.

“The steady growth of the pet industry is credited to cognizant pet owners looking for natural products for their pets and an increase in the amount of households with pets, which is now roughly 75 percent of the country. Pet Supplies Plus’ growth is exceeding that of the industry and on track to open 55 locations this year, a record year for the company,” David Leonardo, senior vice president for franchising at Pet Supplies Plus, said in a release.

The pet industry appears to be one of the most recession-resistant. As people cut back household expenses they still want to provide the best to their animal companions.

Since 1994, the industry has grown every year by at least $1 billion, according to the APPA. From 2006 to 2011, the industry grew by 32 percent.

As reported in InfoStream in July, PetSmart, the largest specialty pet retailer in North America, is also growing by 80 stores this fiscal year.

It’s interesting that more stores are being built when there is such a shift to online purchasing in general.

However, Petco is including services such as a grooming salon, dog training area and in-store Vetco clinics in the new Wellness Centers and mobile clinics that cannot be provided online.

And Pet Supplies Plus will be launching its own e-commerce capabilities in 2017.

BUSINESS - Largest Ever Interzoo

Interzoo, the leading trade fair in the international pet industry, closed its 34th edition saying it was the largest ever.

About 39,000 attendees (up 5 percent) from over 90 countries learned about the latest in pet food and grooming supplies, accessories and services for pets.

The number of exhibitors was up 7 percent with 1,818 suppliers from 61 countries.

Norbert Holthenrich, President of the German Pet Trade & Industry Association believes that the show of products and services for the global pet market gave both journalists and visitors a sense that “the market is flourishing.”

This impression is backed up by international economic data from market research institute Euromonitor: “The overall global market has grown to more than €92 billion,” reported Holthenrich at the Interzoo press conference, “and the European pet market accounts for €28.8 billion of that total.”

The next Interzoo will be held once again in Nuremberg, Germany from May 8th May 11th, 2018.

Global Pet Expo 2016: New Records, New Products, New Trends

Global Pet Expo 2016 saw more attendees than ever before along with a record-setting number of new product launches.

They experienced an increase in domestic buyers at 4,679, 8.4% more than last year, with a total of 6,170 buyers in attendance. The show also boasted more than 3,000 new pet product launches, 1,087 exhibitors and 3,218 booths sold. Total show attendance came to 15,478 people.

With more than 3,000 new products being introduced at Global Pet Expo, it’s a great place to identify industry trends.

Knoxville, Tennessee-based PetSafe brand, maker of pet behavioral, containment and lifestyle product solutions, unveiled 14 new products. Several were the high-tech variety including the Flitter and Whimsy automatic teaser toys both of which have ‘Play while you are away’ modes, the Automatic Ball Launcher and ScoopFree Ultra Self-Cleaning Litter Box.

All great examples of one of the industry trends identified by petbusiness.com - high-tech is in high demand.

Petbusiness.com identified five key trends based on their observations at the event.

A fresh approach to packaging. Much of the new packaging was clearly inspired by what can be found in human consumer products.

Topping off a healthy diet. Pet food toppers were in full force at Global Pet Expo 2016.

Promoting healthier digestion. There was a plethora of products that utilize prebiotics and probiotics to foster healthy digestion in pets.

Scaling down is going up. Many pet product manufacturers introduced items designed specifically for small-breed dogs, as well as smaller bag options for their established diets.

High-tech is in high demand. With electronic gadgets taking over human lives, it’s not surprising there are more gadgets, apps and high tech toys for pets.

New Pet Industry Trade Show in United States

The United States is getting a new pet trade show. Urban Expositions has created the P3 | Progressive Pet Products trade show. P3 will be held in 2016 on August 24th and 25th in Chicago, Illinois. This show will be a reinvention of the previous H. H. Backer Total Pet Expo. P3 is designed to ‘deliver a forward-looking, fun trade show experience to one of America’s top destination cities -- pairing the market’s newest pet products with exceptional educational programming and networking events.’

Urban Expositions’ Executive Vice President, Courtney Muller said, “We have a long history in the B2B space and plan to create a whole new trade show experience for Midwest pet industry professionals. PIJAC Partners With Pet Leadership Council

Last month, during a Top2Top leadership conference the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) Board of Directors voted to begin a partnership with the Pet Leadership Council (PLC). According to Ed Sayres, PIJAC President & CEO, this partnership will help provide government services to the pet trade to “help ensure the availability and health of the companion animals which are the heart of all of our businesses. This new partnership will also help protect consumer choice and be more proactive in promoting the industry and its positive programs, while advocating for the health and well-being of companion animals.”

The partnership between PIJAC and PLC allows PIJAC to work with PLC while retaining their independence as an organization. PIJAC will be able to share their experience and knowledge and combine it with PLC’s communication assets to benefit the pet trade.

Sayres said, “You—our members—still remain the most vital component to our work here at PIJAC. Without you, we cease to care for animals; we cease to have the breadth of expertise and knowledge that only you possess; without you, we cease to be PIJAC. This partnership means change, yes—but it also means that everything we have all come to love about PIJAC will continue. Membership in PIJAC is as valuable – and as vital – as ever. In fact, being a dues paying member of PIJAC has never been so valuable. Not only does your membership support the pet trade and continue to protect the availability of pets, it demonstrates your role in a united pet industry.”

PIJAC is committed to being transparent about any changes that may present themselves and share the information with members. Sharing the story of the pet industry requires the help and support of PIJAC members.
